Coincidences
This thread is about coincidences that occur during our Greek experiences.
I will list two that happened to me. First, when I went away to college I was not sure just what to bring or pack up to go with me. I did, however manage to pack a beaded and sequined black evening bag. I pulled it out in time for my very first formal and I'm sure my jaw dropped wide open - the sequins were in the shape of -- arrows!!! There was no way that anyone could have planned a bigger surprize. What if I'd pledged another house, other than Pi Phi, with another symbol? No one in my immediate family had ever been Greek before as far as I knew, and I'm not sure if my mother or my best friend (an Alpha Phi) gave it to me. But I used it for every formal after that, and I still have it. Secondly, years ago my boss chose me and a coworker for a special project, stating, "I need two dependable, level-headed young women to do this." So for most of the summer I sat next to this girl, working away. One day I leaned over to read the Greek letters on her necklace, which she had never worn before. Her letters were ... my letters. We were both Pi Phis, and neither one of us had known it. What are your Greek coincidences? :) |
I've always loved ladybugs as a kid.
My Mom decorated my room with a big picture of Raggedy Ann above my head when I was little. The book was also one of my favorites. |
I loved the book Goodnight Moon as a kid, and I liked pink carnations.
|
My high school mascot was a lion, and I've always liked them. So having Alphie for a mascot was perfect!
Oh! And I went to Arizona State freshman year and didn't rush. I had a Kappa friend, a Pi Phi roommate, some DG and KD acquaintances... Then I transferred to Kansas, went through recruitment and went ADPi. Not long after, I found out that two of my ASU friends were new Alphas! |
One of my best friends likes penguins a lot.
One of my favorite characters is identified with a white rose. The island where my father's family comes from is famous for manufacturing artificial pearls. And I did not pick Theta Phi Alpha for any of these reasons. My intuition told me something was special about this organization- and I clicked with its members so well, that I am delighted that they welcomed me as an AI. |
I've never told this story on GC before....
My older half-brother and I were raised separately. I was raised by my mom alone, he was raised by both of his parents. I have a less than ideal relationship with my father and I do not know his other children. But I always knew my brother's name. I stopped trying to reach out to my father about six years ago. I gave up any hope that I would ever know him or my siblings. He just didn't want that. Last year, I was visiting a website for a grad chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha in Baltimore. Scrolling through the names of the members, I saw the name of my brother, middle initial and all. I called the chapter president, who I'm friendly with, and he pretty much confirmed that this guy was who I thought it was. Long story short, I connected with my brother after 28 years because we both pledged alumni chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha. And he is a very nice guy. |
I loved elephants and collected them long before I knew many regarded it as the UNOFFICIAL "symbol/mascot" of Delta. I wore red all the time, too.
There are quite a few times that I have needed someone for something unrelated to Delta and, while or after assisting me, the person and I discovered we are Sorors and/or that we had met before. This has happened in-person and also when we communicated via phone or email. One time in particular, I needed to see the familiar smile and get the familiar hug. :) |

But then, I'm a Leo and have always associated with lions, but I didn't go ADPi |
I was given a last minute tour of campus by a girl who would later by my Zeta sister! She was so sweet & just seemed to love the college - that tour helped make my decision.

I wrote about two coincidences in my retro thread but I'll post them here too. The first person I met at the University of Maryland (during orientation) ended up being my KD sister.
The second thing happened during Rush. After a long night I got on a shuttle to head back to my dorm and a girl I didn't know said, "Hi, Lady" to me. I knew she was in a sorority but I didn't know which one. Later I found out she was a "KD Lady." I don't know why she called me Lady though. Other people call me Lady too. My aunt never calls me Leslie: it's always Lady. About 6 months ago I decided to hire a professional organizer. I went to the National Association of Professional Organizers website and entered all the things I needed into this form they have and about 50 organizers popped up in my results. I started looking at all their different websites and finally found one that felt right. I emailed the woman and set up an appointment. When she arrived at my home we went into my office and she quickly noticed all the Kappa Delta stuff. She said, "OMG are you a KD? I am too!" Yep, I can pick out a sister. ;) |
man, ive got no warm and fuzzy coincidences right now. but on Thursday my chapter is throwing a social with some Kappas. we have 7 founders, they have 10, our event is on 7/10.
