yet another question about recs...lol
 

hello everyone!

1. so, once i do (and i pray that i do!) find rec writers for all nine of the ole miss sororities, what exactly do i send them? what should be included in the resume that will help them?

2. for the sororities that i couldn't find a personal rec for, i emailed the addresses provided on their national sites, or the alum organizations that correspond to my hometown geographically if i could find them, asking if someone could point me in the right direction concerning finding a rec. is this the right thing to do? i haven't heard back from anyone yet, and i sent out quite a few of these.

3. on their websites, all of the ole miss chapters say that they "require" recs. is this true? what if i simply just can't find someone for one or two of the sororities? is this the kiss of death at ole miss? is this "requirement" hard and fast?

please don't splash your email address on some random chat site. be smarter than that. if someone needs to get in touch with you and doesn't want to do it in a public post, they can send you a private message. i would edit your post.

Your name, address, high school, GPA, activities (clubs, organizations, etc), leadership positions (offices held, etc), charitable work (volunteering, etc), honors/awards, employment, etc.

First, chapters don't share info with one another during Recruitment. ABC has no idea if XYZ received a rec on a PNM or not.

Second, I can't comment specifically about Ole Miss or other sororities, but I can tell you about my GLO at Bama. Not having a rec is not the "kiss of death" 100% of the time. If the actives absolutely fall in love with a PNM who doesn't have a rec that can be overcome. Though it is a hurdle simply because there are a ton more PNMs the actives love who do have recs.

And don't forget a follow up thank you note about a week after you drop off your resume and pic. Also, it is nice to include a stamped envelope with the address of the chapter house on it with your resume.

either within the resume', or as an attachment, you should go into greater(but brief) detail what your duties were if you held an office in student government or in an organization, what sort of duties you performed when you did volunteer work,etc.

i have already received a reply from two of the sororities i sent out emails to...both essentially said, "find a (XYZ) alum in your area." thanks, but, if i knew a XYZ in my area, the email wouldn't have been necessary in the first place! any suggestions?

Find an Alumnae Panhellenic in your area at www.npcwomen.org and contact them - they probably have already held their recruitment events, but may well be able to help you find alumna willing to write recs for you.

Definitely contact an alumnae panhellenic organization that is in your town or in the town closest to you. They will have a reference/recruitment contact person who should be able to help you.

My daughter is still one year away from recruitment (and counting down) but we have started looking at finding friends and contacts for recs. There is no Alumnae Panhellenic near us that we can find. Although the list on the National website includes Detroit MI and Toledo Ohio there are no links or addresses for an Alumnae Panhellenic in either place. She wants to go South and is looking at Florida, my sister's alma mater, and Auburn, my alma mater. Any suggestions?

Ask around.

If you don't have an alum panhellenic within a drivable distance, I think it wouldn't hurt to try alternate sources. People you know from church, teachers, the list goes on and on. The alum. panhellenic is not the end-all of recs. It's just a starting point.

That is why we are starting early - we are definately small town USA, but very charming, old historic homes etc. The midwest is not a hotbed of sorority alumna from what I can tell. I transplanted from the South, and my dad still lives in GA. Is your reference to Macon Magnolias related to Macon Georgia?

Ann Arbor is within driving distance and is where I went to law school. Is it appropriate to contact a sorority at Univ. of Mich. for help? I wasn't sure if actives could write recs.

Some sororities allow collegians to write recommendations. Members should be aware of what their rules are.

Some of you may disagree with me, but I don't think it's appropriate to contact any of the Michigan sororities, even if your daughter will be attending a different school.

I would start by looking South if she is going South. Do you or your sister have old college friends or any Southern contacts you might try? I know you've been away for a while but I would start in your old home town. Connections mean a lot even if you've been gone 20+ years.
