Scary/dangerous roads!
What are some commonly known scary or dangerous roads in your area? Have you been on any scary roads, out of town?
I find the stretch of highway 61 that runs through St. Charles and Lincoln county in Missouri to be scary as hell. The high number of accidents proves that it's quite dangerous. What's scary about it? The speed limit is somewhat high for that type of road. People drive from 70mph to 90 mph. The dangerous part is that drivers do not merge from ramps that go parallel with the highway, they merge from intersections. So, you have cars moving 70-90mph, the highway is quite hilly/curvy (limited sight distance), and all of the sudden cars can merge from intersections driving at 30 mph, since they have to make a 90 degree turn. |
I-81 is bad for most it....the entirety of I-64 in VA is to be avoided. Only two lanes, most of it is lacking in the shoulder department, increased traffic and with increased traffic, increases in number of people who feel they have to be where they are going that second and so more accidents. Also, the stretch of highway that 95 and 64 run together....forget it. I'm starting to look for alternate routes just so I can avoid this mess.

Short stretch, but I think the 'burgh people will agree: taking out of towners down Potomac Avenue from Dormont to Greentree. Seriously, it's as good as any roller coaster.

Of course, he was really zooming by the time we got about halfway down. |
not necessarily a highway, but Brookville Blvd in Rosedale has a stretch of curvy, one-lane road, dubbed "Snake Road" that goes over Jamaica Bay (near JFK). It smells awful and while the speed limit is low (i'd say its 25-30), ive seen folks speed through that road like a video game. plus, the Q113 goes through that road to get to Far Rockaway and if the weather is less that stellar, anyone could be on edge.
also, at the end of Snake Road, on the airport side, you are at the beginning of a long stretch of Rockaway Blvd, i believe it was a 2 mile stretch of 3 lanes. A stoplight was recently put in because some JFK-related business was built on the side of th road, but also because people would drag race and eventually cause accidents. |
Speaking of Pennsylvania...
Philadelphia's Schuylkill Expressway -- sometimes called the "Surekill."

We have OH 666..unfortunately someone was killed in an accident on that road just last night.
Lots of the roads out in the country here are gravel even dirt and they do up and down and around. I try to avoid those if at all possible. |
Some of the hills in downtown San Francisco are terrifying to drive up, particularly if you ever have to stop or park on one! There are a couple that make you feel like your car might actually flip over, end to end.
Locally, Washington state's highway 2 is the deadliest in the state. Narrow lanes, and it cuts through the mountains. Pacific Coast Hwy. while getting close to Big Sur has hairpin turns along a cliff that have a posted 5 mph speed limit. |
Something about the topic of this rang a bell-I thought a news program had done a story about this. Found this:
Dangerous roads 'Dateline' report identifies deadliest roads in America http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7844269/ Found two other sites while looking for the above: How many fatal accidents occurred on your local roads? Enter the state and county above to see the number of fatal accidents and fatalities reported for each road during 1996-2000. http://www.msnbc.com/modules/tvnews/...form.asp?cp1=1 And then this one. The photos alone scare me-I can not see driving on them at all!: Top 5 most dangerous roads of the world http://www.linkinn.com/_Top_5_most_d...s_of_the_world |
The Wolf Ledges entrance to Rt. 8 is pretty scary.

I don't live near real mountains...how often do cars flip from mountain roads? Or does that only happen in the movies?
ETA: Ok, I just looked at those links...it's more common than I thought. |
I tend to think I-91 going through Hartford is pretty scary; the speed limit doesn't apply, and the CT state police don't seem too concerned with preventing anything short of using the HOV lane when you're driving alone.

Route 1 coming outta Old Town Alex to about Mt. Vernon Parkway. In North Carolina veer of I-40 near Ashville, and see if you don't scream for your momma! Georgia Avenue....lol
