"Greeks Are Generous Alums" Mantra
 

We say it, we hear it, and every now and then an article reveals a Greek's generosity to his or her alma mater. Here's a recent one about a Kappa Delta's substantial bequest to the U. of Michigan:

When . . . Mildred Sommer died at age 100 last year, she left a few clues of her dedication to the University. On a bedside table in her nursing home she kept her University diploma and the invitation to her graduation.

And in her will, she left a $5.2 million gift to the University's College of Literature, Science and the Arts to fund fellowships for LSA graduate students.

Maryanne George, spokeswoman for LSA Development, Marketing and Communications, said Sommer's donation was "the bulk of her estate." She said Sommer made sporadic gifts to the University throughout her life, but none of them exceeded $500.

During her time at the University, Sommer was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and participated in the Italian club. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1928. . . .

Any other fairly recent examples of a Greek's generosity to his or her school? I'll bet there are.

Of course this is an extreme example, but it makes you wonder why many school administrations don't really support Greek life. I bet if schools did the research about donors, they would be surprised.

Well there are cases where wealthy alum use that to put a strangle on the university to get things done for their organization. Take care of my organization and I'll buy you a turf football field, it carries a lot of weight.
