Engagement Party gift?

What's an appropriate engagement party gift? This is honestly the first engagement party I'll be attending so I'm completely clueless :confused:

Is the couple registered? If so, check their registry. If not, I'd give them something nice for their home... think wedding gift, but you don't need to spend as much on an engagement gift as on a wedding gift.

I have always been under the impression that you are not suppose to bring gifts to an engagement party because they will get shower gifts. That said, when my brother and his wife became engaged, I got them a really nice set of knives. I was not obligated to, but they were a close relative

Where I'm from, engagement party gifts are usually bridal magazines (or a subscription), a nice bottle of wine, or a small houselhold item (i.e. picture frame).
