What kind of dress should I get?

I will be pledging in the fall at a small LAC. I remember reading somewhere that very often one is required to wear a white dress. I have been looking at white dresses but have no idea. I have two in mind, would these be appropriate?

Dress 1: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban...pushpush&color=
I have this dress in black and it is somewhat revealing, so I am not sure if it is appropriate for pledging.

Dress 2: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban...pushpush&color=
I am leaning towards this dress.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :)

Keep in mind that the sorority you join will most likely have rules about white dresses that you wear and what is apprpriate.

I don't know that either of them is totally appropriate. Dress 1 has a lacy back and is way too low cut and Dress 2 is sheer on top. Both are not approriate for ritual (at least in my particular sorority).

I did this search for discussion about 'appropriate white dresses' and this is what came up. Check it out, it should give you some guidelines:

Good luck with recruitment!

Not to be a downer, but I have also heard people suggest that you keep the receipt so that you can return it in the event that you don't receive a bid.

Thanks for the link! I am going to wait untill it gets closer to the time when I can get the specific guidelines.

Neither of those is appropriate for any kind of sorority ritual. Think of it this way...if you can walk straight out of ritual into the club...it ain't appropriate.

You should try to find a dress that completely covers your shoulders, is at the very least knee length, and is not too tight or low cut. Oh and no differently colored belts or colored trim.

Don't buy anything on a "no returns" sale either, since not all groups do need a white dress. Anything you get, leave the tags on until you're sure it's appropriate.

I completely agree. Plus, not all sororities use white dresses.

Yikes! I'd keep the dress no shorter than knee length and find as simple a style as possible. You will likely be wearing this dress for just a few hours per semester and around other sorority sisters. Much like a christening gown, the point is usually to appear pure/innocent and for a sorority, blend in with the group. You can make a fashion statement at the club later in the evening with something else entirely. A ritual dress is not the place for high hemlines or exposed cleavage. You might also consider that many sororities place limits on types of jewelry, accessories and make-up that can be worn with a ritual dress.

Neither are really work, they are both a little to showy and one is off white. It must be 4 finger straps in my chapter, and covers your knees, just remember an overcoat is a quick fix!

My sorority did not wear white dresses for presentation. We were told to find a formal floor length dress and the color was up to us.
