I apoligize if this has been discussed already and if it has can somebody please redirect me?

But anyway I was wondering if there are any other coed SOCIAL fraternities out there. IF yes, how do you deal with the whole female member thing. Are they called brother, any issues with have both male and female and the like.

An email to your own Gamma Tau chapter might be informative, as they are co-ed.

I know about the Gamma Tau. While I have not talked to them, I have talked to people from two other of my chapters that are co Ed. I was wondering how unique Psi U was with that much of it.

Delta Sigma Pi is a professional GLO, but we still call female members "brothers". Not sure why, but they do. I'm guessing it might be because it started out as male-only and then they began admitting women sometime in the 70's and just never changed the way we refer to each other.

Im a sister of a Co-Educational Fraternity. We are a social fraternity, we do in fact call our female members sisters.

our purpose and goal of our fraternity is to create an equal bond amoung men and women.

calling women brothers in our eyes is not right. while other co-eds do call female members brothers; we respect them, but it is not our way of doing things.

I'm also a member of a coed GLO, but we do not call ourselves a fraternity, out of respect for all our members. We are Theta Delta Sigma Society, Inc. We are a multicultural social organization. Our women members are called Sisters, just as our men members are called Brothers. Collectively, we refer to ourselves as Siblings.

While Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity is co-ed, we refer to all of our initiated members as brothers. While the Fraternity officially went fully co-ed in 1976, a significant number of our chapters (tech schools and west coast mostly) began initiating women underground and sending in forms with just the first initial 6 or 8 years earlier. At this time some of the other (mostly more conservative) chapters had little sister programs. Refering to the women who had pledged as brothers in some ways was a reaction to that as well as showing full equality. While there are a few chapters that locally refer to their female members as sisters, it isn't very common (Georgetown U. is the only one I can think of off the top of my head).

My guess is that one of the more likely reasons for the split between all members being brothers vs brothers & sisters is whether the group started out all male and admitted women later (all brothers) vs. started as co-ed (brothers and sisters)

We arn't co-ed but I don't think it say anything about gender in our original constitution, but i'm sure it has been amended since 1889. haha.

the local coed on my campus calls their female members brothers, and many of them get offended if you call them sisters.

So far as I know, Delta Psi (St. Anthony Hall) and your own Psi Upsilon are the only co-ed social fraternities. I believe that with both groups, some chapters are co-ed, others remain all male. Based on this article on the website of their Epsilon chapter (Trinity, CT), I take it that it is common to refer to female members of St. Anthony Hall as "brothers."

There is also the case of Alpha Delta Phi. In 1992, some chapters of ADF that wanted to be co-ed broke away from Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity and formed Alpha Delta Phi Society. As I understand it, the two organizations are legally and functionally seperate but share a license to use the name, symbols, etc. The Society, which has five chapters and, I think, one "affiliate" (colony), refers to itself as a literary society rather than a fraternity. I could be wrong, but my impression from looking through their website is that they refer to members as "members" rather than brothers or sisters.

I'm a bit late to this post, but are you asking only about national fraternities?

For clarity, women in my chapter are called sisters if they choose. The university pressured the chapter to give women the option. (Most choose to be called Brothers, though)

Alpha Psi Lambda-National, Inc. founded in 1985, First National Social Co-ed Lation Fraternity in the US. We have 20 chapters. We have brothers and sisters but call ourselves Familia (family in Spanish).

I am a part of a coed social fraternity. Zeta Delta Xi. All members are called Brothers.

We were once part of an all male fraternity, but we withdrew from the national in the 80's.

Now we are only local, but very active with about 30 to 50+ members in any given year.
