Sorority Guide-- by Howle and Stephens

Has anyone else seen this book? I picked it up in Birmingham over the weekend. It's pretty good--gives a PNM a very good idea of what to expect and doesn't, y'know, blow too much sunshine.

It addresses tricky issues like legacies and how to deal with cuts. It encourages women to maximize their options.:) Recs, what to wear at various kinds of campuses, rushing a second time are also covered.

I think it would be especially good for the PNM who's clueless about the whole process. The do's and don'ts are great.

The only goofs I can see: in the back, the book says that Coke's colors are red and white because a founder's wife was an "Alpha Omega Pi"; also, that there's an arrow on Wrigley's Gum because the founder's wife was a Pi Phi (wasn't that disproved?)

Did you pick this up at a local book store or more the Barnes & Noble type? It's listed on Amazon as unavailable, but I'm curious about it.

I got it in a store in Mountain Brook--Smith's Variety Store. I'm still exploring the book and just found a website for it... www.sororityguide.com . Maybe it can be ordered there?

I think "Everything you need to know from Alpha to Omega" would be more appropriate than "Alpha to Zeta".. b/c Zeta isn't even halfway down the greek alphabet :o:p

This is what happens when we don't force our pledges to recite the Greek alphabet while holding upside down matches.

On their website they have part of a quiz that is supposedly in the book:

Quote:

2. The most-played bands in your iPod are:

a. Pop or hip-hop

b. Alternative Rock

c. Country
Since you have the book, could you tell us what the types of music in a person's ipod have to do with "Is Sisterhood Your Thing?" quiz?

Had to get the book back from my daughter. OK, there's a personality test on there and based on your answers, there's a rush strategy for you.

While I'm sure the book has a wealth of info for PNMs and parents, I guess I just don't see why anyone would want to pay $$$ for tips and advice they can get for free online.

It's obvious! Because they never heard of this fabulous place called GreekChat!:D

OleMissGlitter 05-10-2008 11:57 PM

Well their website is not that great at all...hasn't been updated in a while I guess. Do you know if the authors were even Greek? They must not be well-versed and updated either on terminology for recruitment either! They are still calling it rush! I am pretty sure most schools are calling it recruitment now!

Uh, wrong thread, Sherlock.

The site owner of helpmerush.com is an Alpha Gam alumna. Her daughter, as previously stated, is a Phi Mu from Valdosta State.

For obvious reasons, posting real names and email addresses isn't the brightest idea, either.

Brightest idea..............
