Alpha Sigma Alpha & Alpha Sigma Tau
I am a history buff and have noticed that there are many similarities between Alpha Sigma Alpha and Alpha Sigma Tau, in addition to the closeness of name. Have there ever been any discussions for the two sororities to merge into one and be known as Alpha Sigma? If the two merged today they would end up with more than 130 chapters and one of the largest NPCs. It would also revive 8-10 inactive chapters for each. Don't mean to be nosy, just interested in the development of the Greek system.

Thanks for answering these in the only way appropriate. Someone's trying to grind an ax methinks.

I really didn't notice the similarities until we colonized a campus that ONLY had AST. With our secondary colors being their only colors and the "Alpha Sigma", I figured there would be some confusion.
Still, I don't get why oldu thinks that's enough to suggest a merge. I realize that to some people, numbers are all that matter, but going to school on the campus with AST's largest chapter, I don't see myself ever being an AST, and I have a feeling the AST girls would say the same thing about ASA. Also, I just don't think oldu's numbers add up, because I think ASA and AST share a lot of campuses, which would also be another reason it would be impractical to merge. WTH would you do with the campuses that had both? Those girls wouldn't necessarily get along, and even if they did, it would probably throw them well over total. |

i think the concept is awesome. the acronym cannot be beat. like, omigosh. while we're at it, lets just combine Kappa Alpha and AKA. then you get Kappa Alpha Kappa Alpha Frarority, Inc. You know how many chapters that would be?! Freaking AWESOME. AND supermega diversity points. but thats obvi, right? |
oldu, with all your statistic strategery (thanks W) you should realize this is the dumbest idea since the reformulation of Fruit Stripe gum.
AST and ASA share more campuses than almost any other 2 groups...it would create chaos in so many Greek systems I don't even want to think about it. Why don't Chi Omega and Alpha Chi Omega merge into one giant sorority called OMEGA, then they would be really really REALLY huge!! Plus you could have a cute mascot of an owl sitting on a lyre!! Seriously, I can't think of anything more offensive than to come into a group's forum and suggest a merger. Are you really modorney? Or are you just his girlfriend or boyfriend or something in the Pat spectrum (yes, I went there). |
Here's a thought, if any of my sisters wanted to join AST, they would have done so, especially since we share so many campuses. I'm sure the AST's feel the same way about ASA. Let sleeping dogs lie, shall we? ASA has a rather capable extention team. I would venture to guess that they can decide how our sorority should proceed without semi-anonymous input from a message board.

Oh, and not to mention, I don't understand how "it would revive inactive chapters." We couldn't say that, for example, our Mu Mu chapter at Eastern Michigan is "open" again - because it wouldn't be. It, along w/ AST's Alpha chapter, would be resolved into one chapter with a new designation. That is not the same as being "revived."
