reasons for hazing

I'm writing a paper on greek life, and I was wondering on specific reasons for hazing? if any of you guys could speak on that and list some reasons why a GLO might haze, that would be great. :)

1. Stuidity.
2. Ignorance.

This made me snort out loud.

With the Greek situation at your school, do you really want to do a paper on this issue? (I think your answer should be no.)

GammaDelt 05-07-2008 02:11 PM

i agree that its a stupid idea. as my sorority does not haze, i have no practical foundation on this topic. however i find greek life fascinating, and I want to enlighten others on the positive aspects of greek life, so I'm attempting to reconcile with the school by condemning hazing and highlighting the good that comes out of greek life, like good works and sisterhood/brotherhood. so yes, i do want to write a paper on greek life as a form of acceptance and personal loyalties.

DSTCHAOS 05-07-2008 02:14 PM

Choose another paper topic.

GammaDelt 05-07-2008 02:26 PM

my paper is not on hazing. hazing is something I'm discussing, but it's not focused on that. it's about how greek life is community based acceptance, and how sororities that use the pledge process as a loving and nurturing process have higher statistical ratings in regards to membership retainment.
so please don't bite my head off - remember, I'm on your side, so why would I want to speak badly about the greek system?

ComradesTrue 05-07-2008 02:35 PM

No one is questioning your loyality to Greek Life. It is just that those of us who have completed college already realize that this topic has been discussed to death by well-meaning undergrads. In other words, your professor has read dozens of papers on Greek Life already. And most aren't interested in reading any more.

Students attempt this topic every single year. DST was advising you to choose something more original.

33girl 05-07-2008 02:35 PM

The thing is, that's not entirely true.

Depending on the school, there are groups (male and female) that are known to haze that have the highest pledge class numbers and retention. Your premise of "groups that haze don't retain members" is faulty. Not to mention, what are you considering "hazing"? Some national groups consider relatively benign activities, like interviews and pledge class only activities, to be hazing.

I understand that you're trying to do something positive for Greek life, but honestly, I would choose another topic.

GammaDelt 05-07-2008 02:38 PM

i'm doing this topic because it interests me, I love greek life, and my professor recommended this topic to me.

Not more original. More interesting.

Since you insist, good luck.

I don't recommend using message boards for homework/papers unless your research is SUPPOSED TO BE message board-based. Were you using this as a poll and going to report your "findings" along with the source? Or were you going to pass our responses off as your own words?

Do some research on hazing that requires more than reading posts on a board. There is research on various aspects of hazing.

I've researched, this, obviously. But its difficult to find first hand accounts of general ideas about hazing because a) people don't like to talk about hazing because it's such a sensitive subject and b) of the few the statements I have found on hazing that were actually made by GLO members themselves (most statements on hazing are an academic interpretation of what a GLO member said about hazing, not actual quotes). I need some direct quotes about the subject of hazing, by people who can intelligently speak on it, so I can interpret it myself. And yes, DSTCHAOS, in this particular class, students are encouraged to use forums and chat rooms to discuss their subject, because the class I'm taking is American Subcultures, and since online communities are so popular now, forums like this will aid me in my thesis.

I'll be honest, based on the conversation in your first thread and knowing the "unusual" greek life Ithaca has, I don't think that (a) you have enough knowledge, experience and resources to thoroughly discuss "greek life", other than what your organization defines it as, and (b) that anybody at your school will care.

if you want someone black balled but lack the votes, then it is okay to haze them untill they quit

if you want more reasons, examples, etc. feel free to pm me

It actually isn't, hence the research. ;)

Then read the tons of GC threads on this topic and good luck.
