Recruitment Events Possibly not ok with nationals
I'm looking into doing a few big recruitment events for the fall and I wanted to do a day of paintball and a day of go karts, I was told by my alpha and beta that paintball wouldnt be approved by nationals, i was looking for some clarification as to why and if there was anyway I could do it that nationals would approve of.

I'd think that liability would be an issue w/those events...if someone gets hurt, there would be problems. Any of our barrister alums have a thought?

I wouldn't worry about liability from paintball if we are talking about those "camps" that organize paintball events for a fee. A pay to play place.
If you want to run around the woods as a chapter, then there may be slight liability. But if everyone wears the appropriate protective gear, no need to worry. However, if everyone gets drunk, rips off the newest brother's paintball mask, and the chapter decides to play "hit the new brother in the eye with a paintball", then yeah, there's some liability. I wouldn't consider paintball any more of a liability risk than basketball or touch football. It's a sport, and there is an assumed risk of injury that occurs when one participates. Hell, someone could catch a finger in the eye while jumping up for a rebound or jumping to catch the football. Just don't do anything stupid, like play without masks on. |
My suggestion would be to go to the source...call your ELC and ask him for his thoughts. Maybe he could get you in touch with someone that could provide you with certain clarification at Headquarters. Either way, I hope your formal recruitment period goes well, and that you can convince your men to individually get involved with recruiting new members...instead of just relying on big events...that was always a big problem at my chapter. Good Luck!

Bill is correct, you can't do paintball because of the liability. Our insurance provider will not cover it, therefore Lambda Chi says you can't have it. That is why you must submit event planning forms for everything, so that we are insured and the fraternity won't get sued.

That is ludicrous. Statistically, paintball is safer than riding a bicycle. My biggest worry would be the expense. By the time you rent masks and guns and buy your paint, paintball is a lot more expensive than a lot of other kinds of rush events. You could easily spend $30-50 per person in an afternoon, depending how much paint you throw.

I wonder if poker is on the banned list? After all, someone could get a really nasty papercut from one of the cards, get an infection and then die!
The official list of Lambda Chi Alpha approved recruitment events: 1. Sitting in a room by yourself 2. Daydreaming by yourself 3. Sleeping 4. Bouncing an approved rubber ball (with proper eye, wrist and knee protection) 5. Humming a tune |

Sounds about right though |
Can we still do naked fire dancers leaping over vats of grain alcohol while smoking cigars and eating pretzels?

Well DUH John, THAT'S tradition.

2. Daydreaming is bad. It promotes insanity and a lack of reality. You'll lose your mind the way people say Dungeons & Dragons players did in the 80s! This would result in a serious lawsuit! 3. Sleeping promotes inactivity and eventual health problems due to obesity. Besides, you're defenseless to attack when asleep and someone may break into your room to hit you! This lawsuit could be crippling! 4. This implies some kind of perverted activity and therefore should not be allowed. Even the protection you listed did not include a protective cup, chest padding or neck brace. Besides, many people are allergic to rubber and this would cause blindness or even death! Can you imagine the lawsuit? 5. This could lead to an American Idol tryout. This is the worst of them all. First off, what if you develop laryngitis? What if you become angry and attack Simon Cowell when he insults your horrible rendition of Magic Carpet Ride? This should be banned before anything else! |
