Sources familiar with talks see agreement, pilots are still far apart
ATLANTA - Delta and Northwest could announce a combination as early as Tuesday that would create the world's biggest airline, but pilot contract issues still loomed and there was no guarantee the deal would move ahead, three people familiar with the talks said Sunday.
The people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said officials were mobilizing for an announcement provided the boards of the two companies give final approval to a deal.

Done Deal: Delta, Northwest to merge, create largest airline

Delta, Northwest to merge, create largest airline
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc and Northwest Airlines Corp said on Monday they have agreed to merge in a deal valued at more than $3 billion, aiming to cut costs amid skyrocketing fuel prices and compete better globally.
Under the terms of the proposed deal, which would create the world's largest airline, Delta will acquire Northwest in an all-stock swap in which Northwest shareholders will receive 1.25 Delta shares for each Northwest share they own.
Northwest shareholders will get $13.10 per share in Delta stock based on Monday's closing price of $11.22 a share, representing a 17 percent premium to Northwest shares' close.

It's a smart move.

As long as we can keep our frequent flier miles from BOTH.

Coulda confirmed this over the weekend. My company lobbies for NWA and my best friend is one of the 4 govt affairs workers in DC for Delta.

This is a VERY good thing (being as unbiased as possible). The airline industry is currently falling apart and Delta and NWA fit together like a puzzle, each having hubs in different areas.

Moreover, there is a ripple effect in line now where other major airlines will possibly come together. If it happens, it will happen quickly b/c no one wants to wait and not it passed during this administration and risk having the next Pres. shut it down.

Beside the regulators giving it the A.O.K, the pilot unions have a say as well. And right now, from what I have seen and heard, they do not like it as seniority issue has not been fixed.

Nor has the mileage issue either. Last I heard, looking at lessening the amount of NW but giving more options on use. What ever that means.

My hometown is basically Delta pilot/employee central, so hopefully people feel pretty good about this.

I'm pissed at Delta for screwing around with my convention tickets.

Thank you, Delta is NOT my favorite airline!

At one time, Delta was one of the best being # 1. Now it seems they cannot hit their butts with both hands.

This will not be the last of mergers and, it is not just USA carriers.

The price of fuel is killing all of us.:(l

How many have been lost just within the last month? How many more will go down the tubes?

Good by so called low cost carriers.

This is going to be horrible for the Minneapolis area - Northwest SUCKS (as does Delta) but at least Northwest employed a lot of people up here. The scuttlebutt is that a lot of people in the cities will be getting laid off and Mpls will no longer be a hub.
