Housing Ideas and Rules
Our Chapter recently started renting a property close to our University and I'm co-chairing the House Manager position this semester. We don't really have any house rules in place to prevent brothers or guest from doing things they shouldn't do. I was wondering what rules or ideas you guys have or have used in the past in regards to your house. I'm trying to turn around what looks to be a good investment for my chapter.

Defineatly read the contract between you and the school to see what your chapter can and can't do to the property. A lot of the new contracts school sign has policies doing stuff to the exterior, and interior. They may want you to fit into a certain architecture style. (My school is huge on it, even though all the greek houses are just immitations of the actual architecture.)
As for rules, designate an officer (president or house manager) to be the one who approves the changes to the room. Also, give out a small grant if the occupants improve the room and use it as a reimbustment. We have a $50 grant every year to replace carpet or paint the rooms. Generally, you want to have some sort of cleaning schedule. It just has to depend on the type of people you have in your chapters. Work with your brother/sisters and get a good rhythm going. |

I agree with the other 2 paragraphs & will say - you have to be a dick sometimes, but if you let one person slack on paying rent or doing their house job, everyone will & it's a slippery slope. If you say you have to live there x semesters - it goes for EVERYONE - if you don't want to live there, find someone else who will or pay what would have been your rent. No exceptions. |
our rules:
-wash your dishes (if you get caught not washing, you have to put $5 towards the new dishwasher) -keep your personal stuff in your room, not the common areas -don't alter any part of the house (we don't own, and our landlord is fussy) we haven't needed any others. |

Keeping T P in common bath rooms if you have any? Cleaning as you said, the common area? The 3 most important Officers are: President Treasure House Manager. If your Mom and Dad come for a visit, how do you want the place you live look?:D |
Our house is located on campus in the Greek village, so we have strict rules on the appearance of the house. Our house manager makes up a cleaning schedule and each girl that lives in the house is required to do a certain chore each week)whether it be dishes, sweeping, dusting, trash duty, bathrooms). Whenever we get our chore done we check in with the house manager by the end of the week and get it approved. There are about 25 girls who live in the house each year so it's not a big burden especially if each girl does their own part in cleaning up after themselves. We have a certain amount of our budget allocated to house cleaning supplies for the entire year so its not coming out of any one girls pocket.

Our house rules are general in a sense. They are said over time, and not really held up very well.
Things like, take your shoes off when you come in, or else you are mopping the floors. Ensure everything is clean. If you are getting drunk, you better not get so drunk that you can't clean up your empties and your spills. No smoking in the house. Period. You cannot keep most personal items in the common areas. eg. movies are allowed. We go by LOCO (Lights Off, Computers Off) to make our house a little more green and save on hydro. Dishes must be done. If they begin to stack at all, someone will be yelled at for it. It does not prevent repeat occurences however, but the mess is always cleaned by the next day. We have tons of rules like these, all very general. |
