gpa standards
So If a school "suggests a certain gpa in order to rush" and i fall under that suggested gpa, should I not rush?
Is there anything I could do to prove that I deserve to be a part of a chapter? |

Additionally, most chapters on every campus have their own minimums which are often above the minimum created by the campus panhellenic in order to rush. |
Some will let you go through an Open House round, but then release you.

If you are under their suggested or required g.p.a., you need to concentrate on your EDUCATION first - that's what you are in college for, after all! Once you have raised your grades and feel you can take on the extra challenge of sorority membership, THEN go through recruitment.
|
Does it say suggested or required?
If you are below their "suggested GPA" chances are that your GPA is lower than most (if not all) of the individual sorority GPAs. What this would mean is that you are allowed to participate, but that you would very likely not receive bid, since sororities have a national minimum GPA that girls must meet in order to join. Unless you have a ton of extracurriculars and friends in sororities, it is not very likely that a sorority will take someone who is below their minimum. I suggest focusing on your education first. |

Focus on your classes and bring your GPA above (significantly would be good) the required minimum. Then go through recruitment. |

Most often the required GPA to go through Recruitment is lower than the individual requirements of the chapters. If your GPA is at or below the recommended to participate in Recruitment, your chances at success may be dramatically reduced.

As far as "deserving to be part of the chapter" - some groups do take girls that are grade risks, but if there are a ton of other girls rushing that they like just as much and don't have to jump through hoops with their HQ to get permission to take - well, let's just say you would have to be a very, very, very stellar person and your chances of this happening are around .01%. |
At my daughter's school to go through rush you had to have a 2.5. To be in nearly every soroity you had to have a 2.75. To be in two soroties you had to have a 3.0. That being said, one struggling house took several without a 2.75 and I would guess that that several soroities take grade risk with a 2.70. This was not a big secert. But they each take 1 grade risk. There were plenty of girls who did not make grades (since it is deffered rush and based on 1st semster grades and all sororites have access to the grades) several girls went through with 2.5 and they were cut after the first day of parties. As a mom speaking, focus on your grades == your first semster is hard enough without a ton more of distractions. Because believe me you will have plenty to do.

Yup. Nobody should go through Recruitment hoping to be a grade exception. There are usually so many stellar PNM's who made their grades and then a whole bunch more who just missed. Unless someone has an amazing resume, an incredible personality and a whole bunch of in house friends pulling/vouching for her, it's probably not going to happen. |

This is so true it needs to be quoted and repeated: Grade exceptions are VERY RARE. Typically, if a chapter on my campus took a girl who was below their minimum GPA it usually was because there were extenuating circumstances that explained why the girl didn't have grades, she had friends in the chapter, and she had stellar extracurricular activities and community service to make up for her lack of GPA. For example, a chapter on my campus took a girl who was below their minimum GPA, but she had friends in that chapter who knew that she was in a car accident last semester that caused her to miss a ton of classes and hurt her GPA. So they knew that before the car accident she had been on Dean's List. Also, she had volunteered in a medical clinic in South America and was a KSU Ambassador. So she wasn't really a "risk" because the chapter knew that she had the potential to get good grades and had other things going for her that made her a good candidate. |
The bottom line is that if you cannot achieve a certain GPA - without something as time consuming as pledging and membership in a GLO - how can you possibly achieve it while being a pledge/member?
