What are my chances??

My gpa is 3.8, I do alot of community service,my parents are not legacies and I want to pledge my freshman year at Appalachian state. What do you think???:)

While those things all help, the main thing is whether you "click" with a chapter on your campus during recruitment. You'll meet many of their members during recruitment and if you and they both agree that you'll fit in well with a chapter, you will likely end up a member of that chapter. Nobody on a message board can tell you whether that will happen or not. However, you have nothing to lose by going through recruitment because if you don't go through recruitment, you will definitely not become a member of any sorority. :)

Appalachian

Recruitment at Appalachian is not anywhere near as competitive as some of the larger NC schools (UNC, Duke, NC-State). Keep in mind though that no recruitment process anywhere is a complete cakewalk. My best advice is too keep an open mind about all of the wonderful chapters at App, and to ignore rumors and tent talk. Keep a good attitude, and you should do fine. GOOD LUCK WITH RECRUITMENT!!!! You are going to LOVE App!

Thank you!!!

All of the things you listed are positives; good GPA, lots of involvement, freshman standing. Don't worry about not being a legacy. Any App Staters (or those more familiar with App State) correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think there are tons of legacies going through at your school to the point where a chapter would have to choose between their legacies and PNMs they liked better.

Side note: At some SEC schools, being a legacy can actually work to a PNM's disadvantage! Some chapters may immediately cut other chapters' legacies because they don't want to waste time with someone they don't think will end up pledging their chapter. Plus, if the PNM gets cut by her legacy chapter, she might not have too many options left.

Try to start locating sorority women about getting recs, as they definitely can't hurt, but I don't think they'd be vital at App State (any App Staters correct me if I'm wrong).

App State doesn't strike me as the most cutthroat school, so keep an open mind, let your personality shine, and hopefully you'll find a home. Plus, there will be a sorority colonizing there soon, so that is one more option to consider.

I believe that I just read that App State was opening for expansion, so if rush doesn't work out, definitely check into the new group that will be coming in the not-so-far future.

Thank you, does anybody know anyone who is an alumni of Appalachian sorority?

Are you looking for App State sorority alumnae for rec writing purposes or just to ask campus-specific questions?

Alumnae Only (of any Chapter)
Chi Omega
Sigma Kappa

Alumnae of Any Chapter + Collegians from Other Chapters than Your School
Alpha Delta Pi
Kappa Delta
Phi Mu

???
Alpha Phi
Delta Zeta

If you know an alumna of any of those 7 sororities (they do not have to be App State alumnae), she can write you a rec. For example, if a high school math teacher is an Alpha Delta Pi alumna from UNC, she can write you a rec. Some NPCs allow collegiate members of other chapters to write recs. This thread has a list of which ones allow it. Since Phi Mu allows collegians of other chapters to write a rec, if you had a friend who goes to Elon and is a Phi Mu, for example, she could write you a rec. You can not get a rec from a collegiate member of an App State chapter.

Kinda both, in a way.

There are some APP alumnae, but I'll let them "out" themselves.

Go through their formalized recruitment. Go open-minded and see if you find your fit. My boyfriend's mother is an ADPi Charter Member at App and one of their advisors. I love his mother, but I don't feel like I would have been a match for her organization. You will find your fit, if you don't, another sorority will be forming soon enough. Good Luck!

texas*princess 04-08-2008 06:52 PM

^^^ if you are telling her to be "open-minded" then why do you follow that comment with another giving her your own feelings about a specific chapter?

Just wondering.... it just seemed contradictory.

gee_ess 04-08-2008 10:27 PM

^^^I think she was just illustrating that she knows and likes the guy's mom but would be openminded enough to find her own place despite that relationship..

Also, she didn't say anything negative about the chapter, she just said that it wasn't a fit for HER. Very few people would be a good fit at ALL of the chapters on a given campus.

honeychile 04-09-2008 12:11 AM

If I may...

I think texas*princess, like most GCers, would have preferred the usage of "ABC" or "XYZ" - especially when posting to someone not even attending the school in question yet.
