What do sororities look for in a girl when they offer her a bid?
 

I went through rush spring semester of freshman year but didn't get a bid, though I did meet lots of people and make many new friends. Any tips for when I rush next semester as a sophomore?

I'm trying to come up with a plan that will make me stand out from now until then. So far my ideas are, 1) show face at parties, 2) maintain good gpa, 3) dress to impress, 4) casually chat up the sisters throughout the semester, 5) stay active in clubs and maybe run for a student government position, 5) take up a sport.

Any further tips would be great or stories about what made one girl stand out from the rest when she got a bid.

Utilize the search function, chances are you will find advice that will prepare you for recruitment. If you have a question, I am sure it has been answered numerous times on Greekchat. If you have any specific questions about Greek Life at your school, contact your Greek Life office, that's what they are there for, to help you. Make friends with sorority members but do not go too far, also, if you go to parties, do not present yourself in a way that may hurt you during recruitment. Getting involved is a good idea and keep your grades up. Research the current sororities at your school and try not to listen to stereotypes from others on campus, try to go into recruitment with an open mind again. Good luck and keep us posted. Good advice above, and I would add that you probably have a good connection with girls who went through rush with you and ended up pledging. Your roommate? A girl in your dorm? They might be your "in" next fall.

Keep an open mind about ALL the sororities....even if you cut them the first time you went through rush. Depending on your school, your choices may be more limited as a sophomore.

That's about the only thing that would ring true everywhere. Every chapter on every campus looks for different things.

I've seen this one horrible problem when people go through rush for the second time.

They were themselves the first time, and for whatever reason, they didn't get a bid. What they don't realize is that it was probably not because of their personality, or certainly not that alone.

So the next time around they change themselves. NEVER do this. When they get a bid, they discover they aren't happy, because they don't fit into the chapter after all.

Most importantly, be yourself. All of your other suggestions for yourself are right on. Don't come on too strong, but it's not a bad thing to show some interest.
