Favorite Service Project?

What has been your favorite Service Project(s)?

My favorites were two *very* different service projects.

One was working with kids with Psychiatric issues at a Regional Psychiatric Hospital not too far from campus. They needed two people a week and we had to do a 2 hour training session first. A typical kid there was a 9 year old boy who had set a dozen fires...

The other was Football/Carnival Concessions.

I'll try to narrow it down

Let me think..............

Buliding houses with Habitat for Humanity,

Tutoring 3rd and 4th graders in our after-school reading program,

Breaking speed records at Relay for Life :),

and of course nothing says service to your campus like stadium cleanup during football season.

I loved administering a grant and scholarship that my chapter was responsible for. It was probably the first project I was ever in charge of that convinced me that I was more cut out for administrative service (project management) than any other kind.

My favorite was our work at Bailey House which serves people infected with HIV and AIDS and their families. One year, we threw a Halloween party for them. It was a wonderful experience.

Sweet. I volunteered at an AIDS hospice for 2 summers. It wasn't for APO, just because I loved hepling out over there.

"Cut The Rat Tail"

One of the brothers in my chapter has been growing a rat tail for the past 7 years of his life. He said that he would cut it if we do it as a fundraiser. We have to raise at least $500 for a charity of his choice and then it gets cut during an amazing ceremony taking place in the student union. The person who donates the most gets to personally cut it off. This is a one-time project, but its gonna be effing sweet.

Hair

That is so amazing. One of our brothers grew his hair for a few years, but not a rat tail, just LONNNNG hair. And then cut it for charity and we donated the hair to Locks of Love. I did it too, but I guess it's more "acceptable" for a girl.

do you know if they take beard hair? i've been growing a beard since September for a bet and its getting shaved at the end of finals. I mean, kids need sweet beards, right?

and yes, that was a joke...well, everything except the part about me growing a beard for a bet

Beardy Hair

Actually I think that there was some clause that stated that hair unsuitable for wig making will be sold at fair market value or something. So maybe you CAN donate it, lol!

Oh, and do you have a picture of this beard by any chance? I would love to see it!

this picture was from back in January. I had tried to take pictures every couple of weeks to show the progress of the growth, but I have fallen behind. The bet was made with one of the Bros in my chapter after a rush event in september. If I don't trim it till the after finals (April 30th), then I get a case of beer up to a $40 value. Its pretty much a win-win situation for me. I have a sweet beard and a $40 case of beer.

ps. sorry for hijacking the thread

Beard

Man, that is a beard of epic proportions. With that plaid shirt we should put you on the cover of a Lumberjack's Association Calendar. ^_^
