Question about pledges
a) Has anyone had a "special" pledge come through their chapter (like multi legacy, or the child of someone famous or in politics).
2) Was their pledgeship any different then the regular Joe's pledgeship? Just curious. |
Throwing devil's advocate out there - why would such a person have a different new member period? Assuming that things were not happening that let's say, the media would have a field day with, or that the new member was doing things that would put them in harm's way.
Simply because they were the child of someone who has notariety? |
You can play devil all you want. I didn't say they should; I was merely asking if anyone has had that situation and if their pledge period was different.
For some reason I have a hard time believing Eli Manning was sitting at his pledge meetings in coat and tie every Monday night. |

Now what I would find more interesting would be how involved a "special pledge" was with their chapter. From what I have heard from UK Kappas, Miss Ashley Judd's pledge period (Kappa Kappa Gamma at The University of Kentucky) was rather normal. While she was not a celebrity per say then, she was (still is!) the daughter of Naomi Judd and sister of Wynonna Judd when she joined Kappa. While a member, she served as the Beta Chi Chapter's Fraternity Education Chair. http://www.uky.edu/StudentOrgs/Kappa...ges/ashley.jpg I am also pleased to report that she was a member of the UK Honors Program and was elected into Phi Beta Kappa. And for what it is worth, I would venture to guess that Mr. Eli Manning is as much a gentleman as his Daddy. And as such, he is quite accustomed to wearing a coat and tie at any given time. |

Needless to say, his was absolutely no different than anyone else...actually his dad who had been a member of the chapter always called him pledge when he visited. Or pledge bitch. Or "hey fuck you pledge get me a beer." When he got initiated it was a nice father/son moment. |
hmmmmmm....one reason why these types of threads can get tricky.
*** We didn't have a "special" person come through. I know of other chapters that had celebrities or relatives of regional and national officers. In some chapters the membership intake process was uninterrupted and in some chapters there was pressure to give the person special consideration or a reminder that "all eyes on them." |
I've always wondered what it was like for the Thetas to have the Presidents daughter as a pledge/member. And what it was like to have her as a member when she got busted for drinking underage at a bar. THAT had to have been an extremely uncomfortable situation... Do you think that they did AI of her secret service detail too???
|
BOTH Bush girls got in trouble for underage drinking at bars. I never could understand how dumb they thought their bartenders would be. A young woman who has a vaguely familiar face comes in with SS guys in suits (not looking like the typical college guys) right behind her and hands over a fake ID????
Didn't one of the Johnson daughters pledge a sorority when her father was the Commander-In-Chief? I vaguely recall that she lived in her house as did the SS attachment. |

Thus endeth the tangent. |

As for famous people in a chapter, we didn't have anyone REALLY famous, but the daughter of a regional celebrity was in my sister's sorority and the only difference was on Parents Weekend when her dad was walking around campus. It did help that her last name was a pretty generic one- not like Judd or something that would automatically set off interest. |
A few years back Joe Namath's daughter pledged our chapter. Sure he's a celebrity in the "real world", but here at Bama he's a superstar hero. I'd say that the only significant difference for her was that Dad realized on Bid Day that he couldn't attend parent/family events. The other parents, especially the Dads, mobbed the man!!!

This is funny, other than Paris Hilton, most kids are normal and should be treated as such. They will appreciate it more in the long run. The parents may be famous, the kids had no choice who they are related to!

haha, that's funny. he's there trying to see his daughter go through an important part of her life and some jackclown is asking him to sign a napkin. |
