Fraternity Greek systems
Yesterday I did a thead listing by decade the institutions where national sororities were introduced. This is a list for fraternities. Nearly 800 institutions of higher learning now have functioning Greek systems with national fraternities. The trends and comments are about the same for fraternities as they were for sororities.
The first column represents the number of institutions in which national fraternities were introduced (or re-introduced from previous closures). The second column reflects the number of schools where national fraternities ceased to exist. 1825-1880 186 added, 59 closed, net gain 137 1881-1890 45 added, 23 closed, net gain 21 1891-1900 20 added, 17 lost, net gain 3 1901-1910 32 added, 6 lost, net gain 26 1911-1920 41 added, 9 lost, net gain 32 1921-1930 83 added, 4 lost, net gain 79 1931-1940 52 added, 4 lost, net gain 48 1941-1950 74 added, 9 lost, net gain 65 1951-1960 65 added, 14 lost, net gain 51 1961-1970 146 added, 5 lost, net gain 141 1971-1980 115 added, 22 lost, net gain 93 1981-1990 85 added, 26 lost, net gain 59 1991-2000 42 added, 13 lost, net gain 29 2001-2008 31 added, 16 lost, net gain 15 See the accompanying thread for a list of fraternities that pioneered the above campuses. |
