rushing a UCSB frat

I decided a few days ago im going to give Greek Life a shot...

I'm a freshman at UCSB, and really regret that i didnt rush during fall quarter when everyone else did!

Anyways, do you think it would be in my best interest to rush during the upcoming spring quarter, or wait until fall quarter of next year when most people rush?

Also, I'm confused about how the bidding process goes for guys?

And any suggestions about what the best frats are here?

Rush as early as possible.

Make sure you say "frat" as often as you can.

Hell, attempts at sarcasm are lost out west I think.

Ha! I got your hat! Take that, hatless! Now go back to the quad and resume your hackey sac tourney! I'm not gonna lay down for some frat boy bastard with his damn Teva sandals and his Skoal Bandits and his Abercrombie and Fitch long sleeved, open stitched, crew neck Henley smoking his sticky buds out of a soda can while watching his favorite downloaded Simpsons episodes every night! Yes, we all love "Mr. Plow"! Oh, you've got the song memorized, do you? SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE! That is exactly the kind of idiot you see at Taco Bell at 1 in the morning! The guy who just whiffed his way down the bar skank ladder!

Wow.

Um, what?

haha sorry. I couldn't think of a relevant post so I posted a Family Guy line.

I can't stand people who call it a "frat"

Well, I'm sure that your great attempt at insightful humor will help the guy understand why he might want to avoid using the word "frat."

I tend to agree with macallan, though:

.....although if you get highly offended by the term "frat" you need to reevaluate your life.

Not now chief, I'm in the zone.

okay, any tips on rushing a FRATERNITY?

Rush spring. For fraternity rush, visit as many chapters as possible early on. I know on my campus there is a day when every fraternity has to stay on campus. After that day pick your top fraternity to rush and also have a back-up. Pick it based on where you fit in.

You asked about the top fraternities at UCSB. If you don't know by now then, I hate to say it, you might not be the best fit for those chapters because it probably means you have not been associating with anybody in that social circle (guys or girls). So be yourself when picking where to rush. Especially at UCSB, if you are not the super athletic, outgoing, "SoCal" style type of guy there are still plenty of chapters where you will fit in so don't waste time only rushing those chapters that have that type of guy.

When you are rushing make sure to meet as many people in the chapter as possible, but also make sure you are talking to each brother long enough to make an impression. Every fraternity bidding process is different but there will almost definitely be open discussion about pro's and cons of each rushee so if you meet a lot of people you will have multiple brothers saying something specific which is usually a good sign. Additionally, even if a brother doesn't like you (unless they need 100% to get a bid) if you've met lots of brothers then his one negative comment will be washed out by all the others.

Don't fake anything. If the brothers are talking about the business plan of a particular company or sports stats of a team you are totally unfamiliar with don't chime in with useless comments or try to pretend you also know what they are talking about. Do try to steer the conversation towards something you can talk comfortably about. It is important to remember, however, that what they talk about during rush is no different then what they talk about when rush is over. So if you have nothing to add to any of the conversations take that as a sign that maybe this might not be the chapter for you.

Lastly, rush is supposed to be dry but for many chapters you may be asked to go to after-parties. Obviously alcohol will be available. If you drink normally then drink but not to excess. There is nothing more annoying than a really drunk rushee who is making a fool of himself.

Good luck! I have several friends in both fraternities and sororities at UCSB and they all seem like they have a great time.

Agree and co-sign on this.
My school and chapter had a dry rush. Worked rather and no missed any drinks until it was over.
We helped our Brothers up in Seattle with their rush a few times and it was a different world. Wet, very wet.
And seeing rushees drinking like fish and then chumming (sp?) was not very pretty. Nor did it help their case and position in rush.

Just be yourself, keep your eyes, ears and mind open. Ask questions but do not over talk. Let the Brothers talk as well.
Think of it as a job interview.

Break a leg and let us know how things go.

P.S.: What we did in Seattle was "back in the Day". I do not know what goes on there now.
However, given how much more important RM is these days as well as drinking laws, I would have to wonder about
young, under-age, minors drinking at any kind of rush event.

Tanner, read the biggest rush mistakes thread. Maybe just the OP but its pretty thorough.

P.S. Rumor has it that yall have a beach on campus... that is awesome.
