EKU Talks About Alleged Hazing Incident
Eastern Kentucky University officials are talking about an alleged fraternity hazing incident over the past weekend for the first time.
They explained how they received a call Saturday, alerting them to the alleged incident and about how spring break is slowing down their investigation.
Marc Whitt, the Associate Vice President of Public Relations, and Dr. Mike Reagle, the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, say they got a call Saturday that a student was in the hospital. A family member says it was because of a hazing incident.

RPD investigating hazing allegations

An Eastern Kentucky University student hospitalized earlier this month after he allegedly was hazed by Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity members may be one of many victims, Richmond Police said Tuesday.

A formal investigation has been begun by the Richmond Police Department into allegations that stemmed from EKU junior Brent Whiteside, 23, being hospitalized in early March. Whiteside and his attorneys formally filed a complaint Thursday afternoon with Richmond Police, said RPD Chief Larry Brock.

UK joins probe of alleged hazing at EKU

UK = The University of Kentucky
EKU = Eastern Kentucky University

Students may have been involved

An investigation into a violent hazing incident at Eastern Kentucky University has now spread to the University of Kentucky.

UK officials confirmed Wednesday that they have begun investigating whether members of UK's Kappa Alpha Psi chapter were involved in the March incident that left an EKU student hospitalized.

"We are now asking officials at Eastern and with the national chapter to cooperate with us in our own investigation to determine if UK students or the chapter have been implicated in this matter, and of course the university will take appropriate action," UK spokesman Jay Blanton said.

EKU student Brent Whiteside, 23, was hospitalized March 8 for injuries received while he was a candidate for admission to the Kappa Alpha Psi chapter at Eastern.

EKU has confirmed that hazing occurred and suspended the Kappas from campus for eight years.

Richmond police issued warrants last week for three men they say were involved in the hazing. Thomas Barnes, 21, Gabriel M. McLaren, 22, and Alonzo C. McGill, 32, will be arraigned in Madison County on July 8.

On Wednesday, the attorney whose firm represents McLaren and McGill denied the allegations and said the EKU fraternity used the two men as scapegoats.

The Kappa Alpha Psi national office notified UK at the end of the spring semester that it would investigate the school's chapter of the fraternity. Kappa officials also ordered the chapter to cease fraternity activity, Blanton said.

The combination of the Kappa national office's demand and the results of EKU's inquiry prompted UK to do its own investigation, Blanton said.

Neither UK nor EKU has received formal information from Kappa Alpha Psi regarding the national fraternity's investigation of the chapters.

Richard Lee Snow, executive director of the Philadelphia-based fraternity, declined to comment on his organization's findings at EKU and UK or individual charges.

"I'm not in the position to share any of the individual sanctions," Snow said.

Three men plead not guilty to hazing at EKU

An attorney for one of three men facing criminal charges in connection with alleged hazing at an Eastern Kentucky University fraternity chapter said the charges are “selective and arbitrary” because other fraternity members have been implicated but not charged.

In a letter given to the Herald-Leader on Tuesday, a fraternity regional director has recommended that nine fraternity members (three from EKU and six from the University of Kentucky) be expelled or suspended from the fraternity.

3 plead guilty in EKU hazing but records could be cleared by year's end

RICHMOND — The three men charged with the beating of an Eastern Kentucky University student as part of a fraternity hazing ritual will each serve at least 30 days of home incarceration for the assault and could potentially have their records expunged by the end of the year.

Thomas Barnes, Alonzo C. McGill and Gabriel M. McLaren pleaded guilty to fourth-degree assault charges Monday morning in Madison District Court. They beat Brent Whiteside last year while he was a candidate for admission into the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity chapter at EKU. Whiteside was later hospitalized with kidney failure.

The cases were set to go before a district court jury Monday morning for a two-day trial, but the plea agreement was reached before Madison District Judge Earl-Ray Neal seated the jury.

The lengths of the men's home incarceration sentences vary according to their involvement in the hazing and cooperation with police. McLaren, who was in charge of the pledge process within the fraternity, will serve 100 days. McGill, an alumnus of the chapter who lives in New York, will serve 70 days. Barnes was the first defendant to talk to police and will serve 30 days.
