Mary, first, there are plenty of 5,000-student colleges - and those with fewer students - where Greek groups flourish. There are many where Greeks have NO housing, not even a chapter room, and they flourish. After all, it's all about the sisterhood?brotherhood, not a place to lay a rug.
That said, what happens is that somebody's apartment or personal rented house usually winds up being "the house," where the latest composite is hung and committee meetings are held, usually because a bunch of members live there.
Chapter meetings and recruitment events happen in clasrooms. So...it CAN work.
Frankly, I sincerely doubt that each Greek group has enough members to financially support a house. There are different kinds of housing, though, so you might want to check out lodges and similar arrangements.
Your first stop should be your fraternity housing officer. In the meantime, Greek alumnae need to be making the university administration aware of their support of Greek life. As they say, follow the money!;)

I can echo what Anchor Alum said.

If membership is not large enough to support a house, it can become a money pit if it is not kept full let alone having a meal plan in it.

As stated, if some of the members rent a house, use that as the gathering place with your items. While we have a very nice and new house, the members meet in the student center.

I know of schools who do not allow GLOs to even have housing but do give dorm floors for housing.

There are a lot of options here. What you will need to even discuss these options is #1, a credible person to negotiate on your behalf. The school is probably not going to broker a 30-year land lease, or anything of that nature with an undergrad. If I were in your shoes, I'd certainly be at least a little concerned about my own knowledge regarding such things.

Do what AGDee said, your organization apparently has resources here.

Another option would be to try to get your alums, and probably the alums of the rest of the NPC organizations on campus to form some sort of legal entity (a corporation) which would be empowered to negotiate with the school regarding a long-term solution for Greek housing.

If you have a go-to alumna on this sort of thing, consider contacting her as well as your National.

I totally agree, it can work! At my alma mater, no GLO has housing of any kind, and all chapter meetings and events are held in classrooms! Believe me it works! Because of the large number of girls in the NPC sororities, recruitment is even held at the convention center on campus, and even some groups initiation ceremonies and such.

You need to be aware there is such a thing known as an NPC Housing Compact. This is a document that the presidents of NPC groups on a certain campus sign stating they are united in how they will approach housing on their campus. It means that one group cannot build or have something the others do not. Check with your local house corporation or your NPC delegate for more information.
