Foreign Exchange Students and Quota
Okay, several posters lately have indicated that they will be coming to the states as foreign exchange students and have asked about the possibility of joining an NPC organization.
I can see how chapters would be hesitant... having a member for such a short period of time, when instead they could have someone else for 3-4 years is tough to argue. This got me thinking. Some college panhellenics offer juniors for "free"... in other words they do not count against quota. What are your thoughts of the same concept for foreign exchange students? Allow chapters to take a set number for "free." Obviously they would still just be around for a short term, and could never serve in leadership positions. But would the opportunity to have a close relationship with someone from another country/culture be enough of a plus to make your chapter consider it? I personally think that if a woman is otherwise qualified (grades, personality, etc) it would be an interesting addition to the mix, and a wonderful learning opportunity for the others in the chapter. With alumnae chapters springing up around the world, the member could continue her affiliation upon returning home. Thoughts? |
I think a chapter that was cobbing/participating in informal recruitment would be more likely to pledge the exchange student, because unless they were near campus total (and if they were, why would they continue to recruit?) the exchange student wouldn't hurt them - come formal recruitment , they can still pledge quota.

I think it depends on the school.
If State University regularly gets a very large amount of foreign exchange students that participate in rush, I guess that could be a possibility... but I don't know how common that really is. At my alma mater we definitely had several foreign exchange students, but I can't recall any of them going through rush... so something like that probably wouldn't make sense for my campus. |
We never had foreign exchange stunts go through, since the term exchange implies that they are only going to be here temporarily (a year or less).
