Anyone familiar with Panama City FLorida?
Not just for spring break, but to live? My son will be stationed at Tyndall AFB soon and will only have a few days to find an apartment and wants to zero in on good places (areas) to live. Any advice would be appreciated.

How weird, one of the airmen I work with here is headed to Tyndall soon and asked me the same question earlier today. My advice for your son is to call Tyndall's family readiness/support flight and ask them about the prime apartments/neighborhoods in the area.
|
I've actually never been there although my mom just bought a place there so I'll probably be making a trip down soon, I can let you know where the nice areas are.
|
the area around tyndall used to be a little sketchy-can't say if it still is as i have not been to pc in years.
|
i just got back from a trip with a few of my sisters to PCB...the whole place is rather sketchy if you ask me.. but we had a good time
|
Well, hopefully he can talk to other young officers stationed there and find a decent, safe place to live.

Go to the Florida forum here: www.city-data.com
Read through the threads...there's bound to be a PC one...then post questions. |
I went there in 1999. The mall was small and unimpressive. Things may have changed in these past 9 years, though.

my response may be too late, but I lived near Tyndall AFB last year. Callaway, Parker, Millville, and Springfield are the cities closest to Tyndall and all are rather shady areas of town. There are a few nice places in Callaway, off of Lake Drive and in Callaway Point. Also, the Cove is a nice area of town but has limited apartment complexes. Lynn Haven is further away from the base but has beautiful homes and apartments. Please pm me if you have any other questions.

Have they fixed the papermill? St. Joe's had this papermill right on the western side of town, and it STUNK to high heaven. I haven't been to PC in over 10 years, but, yeah. Totally gross.
|
I just got back from a week in PC helping him set up his new apt (buying curtains, storage containers, cooking and stocking the pantry and general organization typical of a helicopter mom). He is renting a nice townhouse in Lynn Haven and I could smell the paper mill. ugh. He said you get used to it. The drive to Tyndall took me thru some creepy parts of town but the Base is in a gorgeous location.
|
lynn haven is pretty far away from the papermill....normally the only time you can smell it on the other side of town is when it's about to rain =)
I used to live right down the road from it and yes, you get used to it to the point where you dont smell it anymore. I'd still advise keeping the windows up while driving past. |
