Why are peolpe on Greek Chat so rude?
I am constantly shocked by the mean, rude and ugly comments made on Greek Chat, belittling other people's opinions and thoughts. Are all chat rooms like this? As members of organizations which all claim to have such high moral and humanitarian objectives, you would never know it from some of these remarks. Is it because everyone can anonymous? I cannot imagine making such vile statements in a face-to-face converstion with someone (or if you do you must get a lot of fat lips!). Let's pray that not many potential members check out this site as this behavior will surely chase them away from Greek life.

This board is TAME compared to some others that I belong to.
If people are going to be discouraged from going greek by just reading a message board, they probably are not the type of person who should join anyway. You've got to have thicker skin than that. |
Again, I am Rashid Darden. Ask about me.
How's the NPHC research coming? |
Wah.

This is a message board so people feel free to say whatever they want and this board is nothing compared to others out there. Also, you can't be sure who anyone is since you can't see them so using a message board to determine if you will or will not seek membership in an organization is just stupid and silly.

I LOVE ERIC CLAPTON
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven? Would it be the same If I saw you in heaven? I must be strong And carry on, 'Cause I know I don't belong Here in heaven. Would you hold my hand If I saw you in heaven? Would you help me stand If I saw you in heaven? I'll find my way Through night and day, 'Cause I know I just can't stay Here in heaven. Time can bring you down, Time can bend your knees. Time can break your heart, Have you begging please, begging please. Beyond the door, There's peace I'm sure, And I know there'll be no more Tears in heaven. Would you know my name If I saw you in heaven? Would it be the same If I saw you in heaven? I must be strong And carry on, 'Cause I know I don't belong Here in heaven. This song always makes me cry. |
I have yet to read anything that I can't imagine someone saying face-to-face.
Ever been in a heated discussion, debate, or even argument in real life? Apparently you haven't. |
I find it amusing that the person who likes making assumptions like "Schools with Phi Beta Kappa chapters have the kind of students we all want in our orgs" (thereby implicitly disparaging the fraternities & sororities who aren't as prevalent at these schools) is accusing anyone of being rude.

If rude means not patting you (a general you) on the back and not accepting your posts unquestioningly, then yes, there are rude people everywhere and GC is tame.
On other boards, people flame just to flame; on GC, the challenge is most often couched terms of inquiry and intellectual curiosity. You know what they say: If you can't stand the heat.... |

And when it comes to just talking trash or having a smartassy tone just because you feel like it, people do that in real life, too. :) |
GC is like a bowl of mixed nuts. All of us with different backgrounds and experiences; different ages and races. It makes it interesting and sometimes frustrating, but I do enjoy the overall experience.
oldu, I hope you'll stick around because someone with your wealth of knowledge and experience is valuable. Don't let the turkeys get you down. |

What "turkeys" are you talking about? General statement: It's interesting when people want different experiences and points of views to be respected but they are quick to label those who take a different approach as them. I'd rather people acknowledge that they aren't openminded than pretend that they are. I acknowledge that I'm not openminded when it comes to many things, have a clear understanding of what I consider "idiot/idiotic" and am quick to call it as such. :) |
Excuse me! I LOVE Greekchat. I love the intellect...and the Bvllshit!
I love the challenge and the agreement. I love the discourse laced with occasional profanities. I love it!!! I think it is an acquired taste! |
I don't think that people on Greek Chat are any ruder than people in real life. I say snarky smart ass things in real life, just as much, if not more than on Greek Chat.
I also think that we live in a cynical society, and today's standards are a lot different than even 30 years ago. We don't respect authority just because we are told to, and for the most part the people on Greek Chat are well-educated and well-written. (Although that doesn't apply to trolls.) You don't get my respect just because you post here, you get my respect by the things you post. Some posts you make, especially the one about Phi Beta Kappa come off as condescending. I'm not one to say "all glos are equal," but there are different criteria for choosing candidates for all glos even on the chapter level. Your posts seem focused on numbers and I don't think being Greek is at ALL about numbers. To me it's about bonds, and history. I'm proud of my sisters at every chapter, even the tiniest. I'm proud of the rich history and tradition of my sorority, and of other GLOs. I find NPHC history FASCINATING, along with the history of all GLOs. Each and every one has a story to tell, what makes it unique and different. That's just my 2 cents. |
Rude? Moi?
I'd say 98% of the people on GC are not rude - the other 2% is made up of morons and trolls - neither of which merit losing sleep over. There are without a doubt those on GC who are opinionated and brash - but as has been pointed out, "rude" behavior is often simply disagreeing on a topic, or commenting on another post. I like to think I'm not rude, but on occasion I have been, shall we say, straight forward in explaining why I felt someone's post was indicative of a lack of intelligence or excessive self-absorption. |
