NPC Sororities Suspend Events with Alcohol (U. of Colorado)
Having new members show up drunk at social events has led the U. of Colorado's Panhellenic to "temporarily suspend" events with alcohol.
(Alert readers will remember that U. of Colorado Greek life just recently got some national publicity because a fraternity's pledges trashed a couple of motel rooms. I'm sure it isn't an incredibly fun time right now for Greeks at Colorado - Boulder.) The Campus Press reports in its February 23, 2008 online edition: http://www.thecampuspress.com/home/i...4-488812e850bc Brief excerpts from article: Posted: 2/23/08 Recent sorority social events have resulted in a temporary alcohol suspension to the CU Panhellenic sorority chapters. . . . Panhellenic . . . agreed to temporarily suspend social events with alcohol after several new members from several different chapters arrived intoxicated to sorority social events. Director of Greek life John Henderson said the suspension happened about a week and a half ago. "The student leadership felt it was necessary for the Panhellenic chapters to re-visit their social events policies and procedures before holding future social events," Henderson said.. . . . Panhellenic leaders contacted have yet to respond for interviews. |
If people are showing up drunk... common sense would tell you they are not getting it at the event... but during activities before.
Just sayin'. |
^^^Thinking the same damn thing. Honestly, they apparently don't need these social events with alcohol-they've got their own!

On the other hand...
If you're dumb enough to show up trashed, you get what's coming to you. I know campuses are different...but on ours if a member shows up drunk to an official event, it's going to be a huge problem. |

If members and guests show up like that, turn em away and don't let them in, that way it WON'T be a huge problem. And we've done that! If they've already paid, well -- give em their money back. Attending things like formals and such are a privilege, not a right. If a chapter has a rule saying "if you didn't make grades, you're not allowed to attend social events" why can't there be a rule saying "if you show up to social events trashed, you won't be let in" ? Punishing the entire Panhellenic community because of a few bad apples isn't fair at all. |

Ours know better than to try that...they know they'll be sent home and they'll pay the fine for missing the event, unexcused. And if the under 21s show up to formal drunk they're not going. And they won't be getting a refund, either. So no one tries...money seems to be a good motivator. |
We had the same rule as OTW. You show up drunk, you don't get on the bus to go (21 or not). We didn't care if it was formal and you were totally done up and with your date. Since events like socials and formal are included in our dues, refunds are out of the question. We stressed this before every big social thing so everybody was well aware of it.
