Delta Chi Suspended at Colorado (Boulder)

Allegedly another case of 1) underage drinking and 2) what I call "you-can't-let-'em-out-in-public" behavior. Allegedly $10,000 or so in damages to a motel:

Excerpt from article:

Boulder's Delta Chi Fraternity has been placed on suspension after 10 pledges were arrested over the weekend in Estes Park on suspicion of causing up to $10,000 in damage to two Super 8 Motel rooms.

Estes Park police were called to the motel about 2:30 a.m. Sunday and found large holes in the walls of two connected rooms, blood and vomit everywhere, destroyed furniture and a coffee pot filled with urine, according to a police report.

Officers said all the University of Colorado students were underage and suspected to have been drinking alcohol. They were arrested on suspicion of felony criminal mischief and underage drinking . . . .

There's also a poll about greeks in general at the link...

http://http://www.myfoxcolorado.com/...Y&pageId=1.1.1BOULDER - The national headquarters of Delta Chi Fraternity has suspended the University of Colorado-Boulder chapter following the weekend arrests of 10 pledges in Estes Park.

The fraternity pledges were arrested early Sunday on suspicion of underage drinking and felony criminal mischief.

A police report says officers were called to a Super 8 Motel about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, where they found destroyed furniture in two adjoining rooms, large holes in the walls, blood and vomit throughout, and a coffee pot full of urine.

Delta Chi assistant executive director Karl Grindel says a representative of the Iowa City, Iowa-based fraternity is expected to arrive in Boulder on Tuesday to investigate.

The arrested pledges were all 18 - 20 years old.

Oh, dang.
As if that coverage weren't enough, the pretty well-known site Smoking Gun managed to post mug shots of those arrested, along with a police press release about what was found.

One of the sad things about this incident is that for oh, around a year or so, the U. of Colorado IFC fraternities have been sort of regularly dislocating their metaphorical shoulders patting themselves on the back for managing themselves well after severing ties with the university.

Not that university recognition would necessarily have averted a situation like this.

Just a mess all around.

Didn't another Colorado fraternity chapter just get in trouble for messing up an elevator and cars in the parking lot at a hotel? Wasn't there a lawsuit involved? Not the best time to be a fraternity man at Colorado...

That was Pi Kappa Phi at CSU - still an ongoing case, as far as I know...

A little more about the Delta Chi motel incident:

http://dailycamera.com/news/2008/feb...to-re-recruit/

Excerpt from the article:

. . . The new members who were arrested visited the Super 8 Motel on Tuesday and apologized, said motel manager Vincent Chung.

"They felt very sorry," Chung said. "They said their parents are willing to pay."

He said the damage amounts to almost $20,000.

"It's bad," Chung said. "I've never seen that kind of vandalism."

But, Chung said, he accepted the students' apology.

"I can understand that they are kids," he said. "They drink and stuff." . . .

Let’s do the math. Nine arrested, “almost $20,000” damages (alleged / estimated) = approximately $2200 per set of parents. For some parents that could be a true burden; for others, it might not even be noticeable.

EDITED TO ADD:
Is it a relatively slow news day or what? The story is featured on the ABC News main site, as well as on the site of WCBS, the flagship New York CBS outlet.

And somehow saying that "their parents are willing to pay" just reinforced so many bad stereotypes of Greeks.
