In need of help..

Ok here is my question... Say you where interested in XYZ fraternity and have attended all of their functions (charity, fundraisers, etc)... you have done your due diligence and know practically all the info. about the org. that has been made available...Now you have expressed your interest to a few members that you know, but you havent had the opportunity to meet a member that you know held a rank in the org. i.e. KRS/KOP and also apart of the graduate advisor committee.. Additionally (You have met others with similar ranks). So you find out he work at you school and decide to pay a visit... Once in his office he ask " Why are you here?".. so you explain the reason for your visit and he give you the cold shoulder and replys "Have a nice day."... How should one take that response... I mean its not going to deter me from continuing toward my goal, but could this decision to visit this individual prevent or harm my chances of becoming a member? :(

I would be completely annoyed if a student walked into my office just to ask about my sorority, especially since my area of work is not related to student or greek life. This person's office is his place of business, and you should have respected it as such.

You just showed up at his place of employment unannounced? If so, that was in bad form. You may want to try setting an appointment next time.

Dude, firstly, you're not being discreet. It's pretty clear that you want to be an Omega.

Secondly, why would you visit someone's place of business unannounced, even if he works at your school? That's pretty rude, don't you think? (Unless he works at an information desk)

If you attended all the events and made sure you were seen, then they know you are interested in them.

Why haven't you made it a point to meet ALL the members of the chapter?
Have you asked the ones that you do know to introduce you to others?

Finally, while you don't know what the rules might be for interaction with aspiring members (him telling you to have a nice day might be all he's allowed to talk to you about) I dunno man.... that would have been a sign for me. You don't want to be perceived as a psycho stalker aspirant.

Yeah i gave it some thought and realize it wasnt the best move on my behalf.. but mistakes are made and you learn from them. But I cant dwell on the past now cause its done... moving forward my only concern is was it be a damning move.

Just thought maybe i could get a lil insight on the situation..Thanks for your response.

sometimes i wish folks would run stuff by us BEFORE they make an a$$ of themselves instead of coming to us after the fact to help them "fix" it.

can that be the new new (or nu nu) for 2008?

girl, no. We have enough of those already and we can't help them before they do it either.

Actually, I was a little impressed by the OP's initiative. And it could possible count in his favor. The reaction of the school employee was to be expected.

R., how did you know it was Omega?

Senusret I 02-14-2008 10:32 AM

KRS = Keeper of the Records and Seal
KOP = Keeper of the Peace

I looked at Omega before any other frat and I remember those terms were executive offices. (Plus, I googled to make sure lol)

no? oh well. it works out nicely in my head. in the middle of typing their situation, they realize not only is what they're about to do not a good idea, but also a bunch of folks they don't know on a message board can't possibly help them in the manner they need. after said epiphany, they decide not to post after all.

Senusret I 02-14-2008 10:40 AM

^^^ That's happened to me countless times on GC, particularly for non-Greek advice. Why don't people think things through?
