We haven't discussed expansion in a while. I saw this article and decided to post on the topic. Article on LCA expansion to Lake Forest College.

On the C&C listed three chapters already colonizing this spring already, plus the Wisconsin-Whitewater recolonization.

The lake forest guys are pretty bomb. They came down(ish) to Elmhurst for an EC v. LF soccer game. EC mopped the floor with them, but that's because we have a sick team. They're a good group of guys, though. They've even got some hockey players!!! (a d-3 hockey team is sweet). I hope to do joined events with them in the future.

Any idea how many men were recruited to start new chapter?

I dont remember exactly, but they had upwards of twenty I'm pretty sure. A buddy I went to high school with goes there and i'm trying to convince him to join. A couple of their guys showed up to our game against the A-Sigs (morons) and we had some guys from lake forest and some guys from bradley come our way for the 6 HOUR leadership training. I checked for a website, but i couldn't find anything online about lake forest's greek life.
Here's hoping that they have a long good life at the lake forest campus.

Last I heard there was going to be a recolonization at Idaho, is that still the plan?

Expansion?
 

I've not heard about Idaho, but both UCLA and UC Santa Barbara are both on tap for Spring semester '09 - a couple of months from now, and Cal perhaps for the Fall semester of '09.

Yes, Epsilon Gamma at the University of Idaho will be recolonized this spring, as per what is stated on the fraternity's website, as well as Epsilon Sigma at the UCLA and Zeta Eta at UC-Santa Barbara.

For Fall '09 Epsilon-Kappa at Drexel University; Mu at Cal-Berkeley; and
Delta Sigma at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.

Local word is that it is starting this next month at Idaho, but I haven't read or seen anything about it. If you know who is being sent here and if they want any local information about the town and what not don't hesitate to contact me. Tau is 8 miles away but is a completely different state, town, and school.

From what I have seen is that AGR's lease with Lambda Chi ends this year, so the house will be available for the new colony once formed, as well as scholarships for them. I believe that they have an Alumni Association that will work with the ELC's when colonizing.

Yes, allegedly the former TKE house (which AGR purchased) will be finished for Fall 2009, which with my understanding is when LXA will move back into their house (which still has the Pi Phi lozenge on the fireplace!). Word on the street was this spring is the time to gather men for the colony, and that core group will occupy the house on Deakin and rush from there this fall. The house is pretty nice, has a volleyball court and some private parking, as well as being close to the Greek and Greek overflow parking. I will be sad to not see AGR putting farm equipment on their lawn and their wood chopping philanthropy when I drive down that street, but I'm sure they will just do it on New Greek. The remodel of TKE will be impressive, and if it is anything like the recent SAE remodel it will look amazing.

Sig Ep is still a colony, and it has been a year since the last fraternity, Pike, closed. This campus is kind of odd, chapters don't close for RM reasons or have an incident, they just get smaller in membership and then resolve. We also don't have a Greek Adviser right now, which may make things interesting for a recolonization. I never heard of TKE wanting to come back in the near future, nor Phi Tau, just Pike and the rumblings of a fraternity I won't publicly name that has never been here wanting to come and colonize.

ETA: Though there are local alumni they may be of different ages, different chapters, and as a young alumna still on campus (wth changing my mind about grad school and getting a second degree, ugh) I may be able to offer a perspective they are unaware of. I'm just trying to be nice because I've seen fraternities close and the last colony, and it can be hard here at times.

I think UCLA has reopened and closed more times than bars that get busted for serving minors. I think this is about the 3rd time I've heard the cycle repeat itself since the mid-90s.

I passed by the UCSB house back in 1998, but it was summer so I didn't stop since there was probably no one there. I'm guessing they'll be in a different house now.

The campus at UTEP always seemed to lose fraternities too. It seemed like many of them were fly-by-night groups that came on strong for a semester with a huge blanket rush then were gone soon after.

When I was a freshman there was Lambda Chi, Kappa Sig and SAE... that's it. Over the next 5 years the campus had added Phi Tau, SigEp, TKE and AKL.

Phi Tau came and went after about a year. Nice guys, but no real campus presence.

Kappa Sig was kicked off in 1998 due to an enormous debt and other issues. I hear they came back a few years ago, but are one of those blanket rush types now.

SAE went from the biggest on campus with BY FAR the strongest alumni base to nothing at all. Two brothers were named in a rape at a party in Albuquerque and after that all of the other members disappeared like rats abandoning a sinking ship. It really was the end of an era.

SigEp crumbled hard. They really fell apart after many members were upset about a guy who had previously been kicked out was allowed back in due to lack of membership.

TKE had a bunch of guys for about 1 year who always wanted to fight everyone. They were kicked off quickly and their membership went from 60 to 0 faster than a burning car.

I have no idea whatever happened to AKL, they stuck around but never were all that big. I have no idea if they're still on campus or not.

In that time the campus also lost Chi Omega due to lack of membership, another organization with a long history that disappeared.

I don't know who has been added or subtracted lately though. I'm sure there has to be more than a few fraternaties left with the ones that were added.

I think that you may have UCLA confused with San Diego State. SDSU has opened and closed several times, usually for drugs and conduct but most recently for risk management.. UCLA was closed ten or twelve years ago for recurring risk management issues.

Both Santa Barbara and UCLA own their houses so they will be returning to their own real estate when the time comes.

You're right. I was thinking of SDSU. Back when I was in college I was in San Diego a lot since SDSU and UTEP were in the same conference. It was a crapshoot whether or not there would be a chapter there or not.

UCLA had the drownings of both a big and little brother, which were alcohol related which caused the chapter to temporarily shut down, then they got in trouble again a year or two later and were closed. UCSD closed in 2002 or '03due low numbers after they had a big house cleaning, their delegate sat next to me at General Assembly and told me their case. They tried to get it back together but couldn't, I think Scott Larson was his name, his dad is a big alum at UCLA.
