If You De-Pledge Yourself, Can You Still Join Another Sorority?

I accepted a bid from XYZ (which was my second choice). I never went through initation thought. Can I still join a different sorority?

Yep, as long as you follow the rules about how long you have to wait before re-rushing and there's a chapter who wants to give you a bid.

Most of the time yes, though it does depend on the campus environment in regards to granting you a bid if another sorority already did. Please use the search tool, and there are a number of threads on this topic.

Yes, some campuses make you wait x amount of time before pledging a different one after you have been extended a bid. Some don't at all.

EDIT: ALL campuses make you wait a year. Sorry!

So that everyone knows, according to NPC rules, a girl must wait one calendar year before she can rush again. So yes, you may join another NPC sorority after waiting one year.

This rule applies if the PNM is rushing on the same campus. If she decides to transfer to another campus the following semester, she is not bound by the one year rule.

I'm in no way suggesting that at all...but some girls have done it. I can only imagine how much of a PITA it is to transfer to another school the following semester and then go through recruitment.

Incorrect.

If you depledge one NPC sorority, you must wait a calendar year to pledge another. (And no, I don't mean a year to the day.) This rule should be followed at ALL campuses. Any campus that doesn't follow it is violating a unanimous NPC agreement.

The only times you don't have to wait a year are if you transfer campuses, or if the group you were pledging has their charter revoked.

Edited! Thanks.

I have a question about this though... If you get a bid from XYZ Fall and then you rush again in the Spring, you can't get another bid from another house, but you can get a bid from the same XYZ house? This happened to my roommate and they said, "if you don't take our bid, you can't have another bid period.".

If you get a bid from a chapter during formal recruitment you are committed to that chapter for the year until the next formal recruitment. They would not extend you a "new" bid as the original bid is still binding.

what if I pledged a local sorority, dropped and then wanted to pledge a national sorority the next semester. Is that allowed?

Allowed, yes -- but depending on your circumstances in your original sorority and your campus culture that may or may not happen. Also, you don't know if the national sorority will give you a bid for membership. You need to be invited to join first before being able to pledge anything.

I know, haha. But I met the girls and I like them & I'd just like to know that I haven't lost my chance. And there were no circumstances, I just learned things about some of the girls and didn't wanna be apart of them, but since its allowed, i'm ecstatic.

Right, but just because they CAN doesn't mean they WILL.

Yeah, I got that.

LocalLove9 02-01-2011 08:18 PM

Also, NPC wise it might be allowed, but it might not be on your campus. On my campus, however, the locals are part of panhell and abide by all npc regulations regarding rush. So a girl who accepted a bid from a local would still have to wait a year before rerushing or otherwise accepting a bid from a national organization. So maybe you can join now, but you can only definitely be eligible to join after a year...check with your campus panhellenic council or Greek Life Office.
