Favorite Musicals!
*I did a search and nothing came up, so...*
Which are your fave musicals? I LOVED Grease - that's one of my faves all-time. I also really liked Rent, Oklahoma, and Miss Saigon (I saw the last two only in school productions, though)! I think I'm forgetting something else...ack... [This message has been edited by newbie (edited July 16, 2001).] |
The hills are alive with THE SOUND OF MUSIC!! I've seen it a zillion times and never get sick of it.

Love Musicals! I miss living close to NYC http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif
Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof (HS productiong...was in the Pit), Sound of Music and Rent(tho I've never seen a production..yet...long story) ------------------ ~*~to be true to ourselves, to those within and without our circle ~*~ |
Great thread! In no particular order...
- Grease - Footloose - Chorus Line - 42nd Street - Annie (my first B-way show ever) - Riverdance (not sure if it counts, but it's incredible!) - Phantom of the Opera |
Wife was a theatre major in college and I think we've seen all of the above either in NY or traveling companies.
Hard to beat Les Miz -- but I would add two more to the list: Jekyl and Hyde (OK, I'm too lazy to see if I spelled that correctly) and, believe it or not, the newest Disney production Aida. Fantastic. Oh, then there's Whistle Down the Wind, a Lloyd Webber show I saw in London, but really bombed in NY. Not too bad. Except for the Brits trying to do US Southern accents. Yikes! Then there's Puck's Potion. Never heard of it? Well, it's a really neat show a couple of local HS and Middle school teachers wrote as a Master's project. (Much better than you would expect with 23 original songs and a 100 page script) It's a musical adaptation of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," complete with flying "urban mystics" (you can't say faries and be PC). Our son played Puck, the lead in the World Premiere at his high school. Pardon the digression. Now I need to get back to NY for another theatre fix. OK, I'm finished. DeltAlum |
The King and I and the Music Man.
Some fine work ------------------ ------------------ No funny squiggles, just bold letters: TKE |
I was a theater geek in HS too http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I'm also a bit of a snot about musicals. I cannot stand ALW. I think his stuff is trite, basic and panders to the lowest common denominator of theater goer - he gets a catchy tune and uses it over and over http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif
My all time favorite is Into the Woods. Sondheim...now THERE is a true musical genius. That man has the power to weave words and music together into a multi-layered tapestry. Its amazing. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif My other faves include: Will Rogers Follies (I was in that show in HS http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif), Crazy For You (can't go wrong with Gershwin) and Ragtime (they were robbed at the Tony's in 98 - I'm STILL not over the Lion King winning best musical http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif). I saw Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway 2 years ago. The show itself was pretty standard. But seeing Bernadette Peters live was INCREDIBLE. She's awesome. I also saw Jery Lewis in Damn Yankees. Man, I need to get back to NYC. I'm *dying* to see The Producers |
Great Topic Car!!!
Les Miserables-my heart melts everytime I hear the music! I love it! RE: The Producers- I am so sad http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif by the time we get to finally buy tickets- Lenny & Squiggly from Lavern & Shirley will be playing the main roles! |
Very cute topic.
My faves in no particular order West Side Story-When you're a Jet, You're Jet all the way... Grease Wizard of Oz The Wiz Little Shop of Horrors Meet Me In St Louis I'm sure there are lots I'm forgetting, but I need to get to bed now http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
RENT! hehe, I am a total RentHead!!!! Right now I am in "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" if anyone is in the Pittsburgh Area July 27 & 28 let me know, and you can come!!!!!
Ive been in: Bye Bye Birdie (small part & ensamble) The Sound of Music (orch- I cant stand that show anymore!) The King and I (dancer) Mame (Betty Boop Girl and Ensamble) Drood (ensamble) I didnt get in Rocky, but Chicago auditions!!! Woo! I also LOVE Songs for A New World! ------------------ "...A dynamic sisterhood of powerful and passionate women maintaining uncompromising principles, igniting positive change, and embracing individuality!" Phi Sigma Sigma - Gamma Gamma Chapter --- 1-9-4-6 Doohretsis! Tau Beta Sigma - Delta Omicron Chapter --- Go Golden Chickens! I mean EAGLES! There are only a few good things that came out of Clarion- Chris Kirkpatrick of NSync, Kurt Angle (Pre WWF!) and any PHI SIGMA SIGMA! |
Miss Saigon is my absolute favorite. They did a run here in Honolulu in 1999 and I was fortunate enough to see it twice...once with my mom and another time when I won tickets at work. What was most exciting is that we had a great deal of local talent touring with the group...and it was a great homecoming for all of them. Months prior to the performances they were holding auditions for ensemble roles and I so wanted to try and audition for a bar girl role, but my mom made it clear that she didn't want me trying out for the role. Their costumes didn't cover much. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
Musical that I loathe the most: GREASE. Sorry Grease fans. When your name's Sandy and your last name HAPPENS to start with D, you're obviously the target of many rounds of "LOOK AT ME I'M SANDRA DEE". It gets annoying after 20 years. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif ------------------ A single seed...becomes a Rose of incredible beauty. A single grain of sand...becomes a Pearl of great worth. A single great idea...becomes a Century of success. Go Alpha Gam! |
There isn't a musical I DON'T like. I love the old R&H ones-you know, the ones every HS puts on. Top of my list is Jesus Christ Superstar second is a tie between Rocky Horror PS and Phantom. Now if we were to discuss certain songs from those musicals I could come up with another list. The only thing mentioned that I haven't seen is a live River Dance performance, but PBS aired one last year.
I saw one with FRANK SINATRA about gambling and the Salvation Army, but can't remember the name. FUNNY! |

I've seen a ton of musicals and Cabaret is my all-time favorite. I saw the traveling show last year at the Fox in Atlanta and would love to see it on Broadway! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I strongly recommend it to theatre-goers!
