Diversity

Hello,

I'm an Asian-American and choosing a sorority is hard so input will be appreciated.

I go to school, which is not very diverse. Basically I have a choice of joining a predominately Asian or predominately Caucasian sorority. It's a tough choice because I'm like in between and I would love to pick both. I love all sorts of ethnicity but my school is pretty segregated.

Thanks in advance.

What would your like input on?

Thanks in advance? For what? What did you want us to tell you?

Get rid of the "predominantly Asian" and "predominantly Caucasian" and pick the sorority that best fits you. Think about opportunities beyond college. Just because your school is "segregated" doesn't mean you have to segregate yourself.

This is a choice that you have to make for yourself. No one can tell you which one you should join.

Ditto to what OTW said.

Look at the specific purpose and ideals of the sorority and the people in the chapter. See where you best fit in.

If you want an organization that is specific to cultural interests or services a particular community, but is not limited to that, you may want to see if that applies to that specific predominently Asian sorority. The "predominently Asian" might just be a membership demographic and has nothing to do with the ideals or philanthropy.

i think you should be the first to cross over and join the "predominantly caucasian" sorority. unless there are other asians already in that one?

Do Asian sororities look down on women who went through NPC rush first?

Just curious.

I don't recommend anyone does this unless they are genuinely interested in the sorority and chapter.

Plus, the whole "add a drop and stir" works better with coffee than it does with people.

EXACTLY.

At my school, people do not look down on Asians who went through NPC rush. I'm an Asian in a NPC sorority and LOVE it. Could not picture myself in the Asian ones in fact. Give NPC a try, especially if NPC rush occurs before the Asian ones' rush.

Senruset wasn't asking if people look down on Asians who went through NPC rush.

He was asking if Asian sororities look down on Asians who went through NPC rush first and perhaps decide that the NPC sororities were not a good fit.

^^^ Yeah. I wasn't sure if she didn't understand or if she was ignoring me, lol

I can only speak for my chapter, but I don't think we would have a problem with someone having gone through NPC rush first. We're a pretty laid-back chapter. However, I know there are some schools in California with HUGE Asian-American student populations and rush can be more intense there, so things may be different at those schools.

Some things to take into consideration:

Size: There may be some California Asian-interest sorority chapters that are as large as NPC chapters. But at most schools, the Asian-interest sororities are going to be smaller than the NPC sororities. For me, I like being in a smaller org. But for somebody else, they may prefer being in a larger org.

Purpose: Do you see yourself in an org that does community service/philanthropies that are more general or more geared towards helping the Asian and Asian-American communities?

Socializing: Since you said the campus is pretty segregated, if you join an NPC sorority, you will probably be mostly having socials and other events with the IFC fraternities. And if you join an Asian-interest sorority, you will probably be mostly having socials and other events with Asian-interest fraternities, if there are any on your campus. At PSU, we (Greek community) have been trying to get more mingling amongst different councils...for instance, my sorority participated in Greek Sing this year and in Greek Week last year. However, most of the stuff we do is with orgs in our council (Multi-Cultural Greek Council).

I think what's most important is seeing where you feel you'd fit in and would be a good match. I think you should just go and check out both NPC recruitment and the Asian-interest sororities' rush events. Get to know the girls. Learn about why the orgs were founded, what their purpose/values are, and what kind of things (community service, campus activities, socials, sisterhood events, etc.) they do. Then figure out for yourself what org would be a good match for you and you'd be a good match for them.

Pardon, I forgot the 'first'. Otherwise my post stands.

DSTCHAOS 02-01-2008 06:16 PM

It doesn't stand if you were trying to provide a detailed answer to Senruset's question.
