Annoying roomate(s)

For all of you dorm/apartment dwellers, what is it that your roomate(s) do/does that makes you the maddest? Here's mine:

I just came in from class a while ago, I'm sick and need to eat something to take some medicine. Well, I go to look for my bread. Turns out one of my roomates decided that it needed to be frozen. I asked her why she didn't ask me and she said "well, I didn't know who it belonged to." In that case DON'T TOUCH IT. Sheesh.

This is the same roomate who, when asked to help buy toilet paper said "oh, I'll just go steal some rolls from the dorms" and who flat out refused to put some of her stuff in the bathroom cabinets, as opposed to the counter top to give us more space.

So, what is everyone else's roomate horror story?

I had the worst roommate experience my junior year. She was a nice, quiet girl that had lived down my hall sophomore year. She was looking to move out of the dorms and was looking for a roomy. I was in the same situation too. So we decided to get a place.
So everything started off fine. We got a fabulous place slightly off campus. We decided to just buy groceries together since we liked a lot of the same foods. Everything was good. Until her family stepped in.

Why oh why did her mother and brother come to visit like ALL the time!! Not only would they just visit, but they'd bring family friends and whoever else wanted to come. Her mother was infatuated w/ our place and she'd always joke about coming to live w/ us and how she wish she had a place like ours. Well she wasn't joking. She might as well have moved in w/ us cuz she was there so dang much! I thought I was gonna go insane. I realized that this was her family and all, BUT , that doesn't just give her to right to come to our place ALL the time. She would show up at like 11 or 12 at night! This woman lived 45 min away from our school! I could go on and on about it. I would tell my mom and even my mom was pissed about it. That was just one problem.

My roommate also had a boyfriend. Now at first he came over a lot. I didn't really care too much b/c they would just go in my roomy's room. BUT, this dude smelled like you wouldn't believe!! Let's just say that when I would come home from work, I knew he was over cuz our apt would smell like him!! Ugh, it was nasty. He would come over right after work and would throw his smelly coat on our sofa. It was sick! And my roomy KNEW he smelled. She would joke around like "Haha, doesn't he stink? He won't go shower after work..." UGH! I didn't understand why she put up w/ that. THEN, he would eat up the food that I paid for w/ my hard earned money! That really pissed me off. He'd also bring his friends over and they'd mess up every dish in the kitchen!
It was just the worst! I vowed never, ever to live w/ someone again until I got married!

I have some roomate horror stories.

Freshman year I had a roomate in the dorms, she was nice at first, we were going to be friends but we could live with each other. Until she started to hang out with a girl down the hall that liked my boyfriend (who later became my husband!) Lots of problems, but this day really sticks out as the worst.

So one day she decided to change the answering machine message to one of the cute song things. She left the room to go down the hall to check the message, I just came back and picked up the phone when it rang. She said she was trying to check the messages, I said that there were none. I didn't know she was down the hall and just changed the outgoing message. Since I didn't know what she was talking about she got angry and we argued for a little bit. I then used the phone to call someone. She comes running down the hall thinking that I was delibertly (sp?) stopping her from checking her new message. I didn't care what message she put on it - even it was cheesy - it was her machine. So to 'punish' me, she snapped the phone and machine away and never hooked up her phone and answering machine for the rest of the year which was about 3 months. Fine with me since I never got messages anyway (relied on email more) and it was her machine and the school provided a phone.

I have more but don't want this to get too long.

I guess the fact that got to me about what my roomate did is that I chose to live with this girl.

I have some other horror stories from random roomate assignments while living in the dorms. Roomate #1 MADE drugs. Apparently, morning glory seeds + paint thinner = hallucinogen. After I moved out of that, I got put with a girl who accused me of stealing her stuff, told me I typed too lound and distracted her, I was not allowed to bring a portable TV with headphones so as not to disturb her...and the best part was the RA backed her up because she lived in the room first! After that, I had a private room for 3 semesters http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Besides your typical "My freshman roommate had sex in our room on the top bunk with her boyfriend" story (which did happen to me, often), I have the "we moved in because we were friends and ended up not being able to stand each other."

This is what happened - there were three of us, all named Sara, and all memebers of Sigma Sigma Sigma. Right. Sara Sara Sara from Sigma Sigma Sigma. Well, our one particular roommate, besides being a compulsive shopper (the kind who always whines about being broke) she just didn't like me and the other Sara to spend time together, but would shut herself in her room. She started labeling all her food, and didn't want us to erase any of the caller ID's on the id box, so we had like, 50 numbers on it. She then explained, after I used her curling iron, that if everyone used her curling iron, it would break quicker and she would have to buy a new one. She constantly asked me if the other Sara was using her soap....Her soap?

It was just a ton of little things, and you know how those little things grow to be big things....Basically she made no sense, didn't know how to share, and can I just tell you this....

I couldn't take it when she brought home "Samatha Jane." One of those dolls that look like little girls leaning up against the wall - she actually would get irritated with us when we fake yelled at it.

What are you gonna do, right?

My freshman year roommate and I got along fine...the only problem was that he listened to a lot of shitty alternative music that I didn't like. To this day, I cannot stand to listen to even one Depeche Mode song. No offense to those who like Depeche Mode.

my roommate last year lasted two weeks before she was kicked out for pushing me down the stairs. we had gotten in a fight and she called her mother early *and i mean EARLY* in the morning to talk about it. well, she called me "white trash" and i called her a whore as i was leaving to go to the bathroom. the bathroom's downstairs and she pushed me down the whole flight. needless to say, she was out the next day.

but on an up note, in response to BCNUQT's post :

Besides your typical "My freshman roommate had sex in our room on the top bunk with her boyfriend" story (which did happen to me, often)...

*blushes*...i was that freshman having sex on the top bunk with her boyfriend. not THIER roommate...but i admit i was one of "them". sorry.... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

This thread was not designed to bash people, it was to compare bad experiences. What if Kelsey Mullins was to see this. You made a really poor choice here Heather (yet again).

On another note, my Freshman year roommate was a nightmare, and that's all I'm saying.

Somehow, I've never ever had a bad roommate experience. (Now you all hate me, sorry). My freshman year I got paired with a girl who was really nothing like me. But who really rocks. We ended up becoming friends, but we didn't spend that much time together. Which worked out well. We ended up roommies for 3 years in a row, without a single fight. I also had 3 roommates when I lived in A^2, all very cool. We got along splendidly. Then I had 2 roommates, both guys. Then a guy and a girl. Now just a guy. Still, nothing to complain about.

Maybe it's because I shared a room w/ my little sister for 11 years?

Okay, I hope she's not reading this, but I had a seriously anal roommate my first time in Korea. I might have grown to hate her if she weren't the only other person in the whole town who spoke English as her native language.

"No, don't wash the dishes like that, wash them like this. No, don't drink milk from the plastic cups, drink them from glass because plastic collects smells. No, don't put the pillows over here, they're better over there. No, don't put the remote face-up on the table, it has to be face down http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif " What? Are you kidding me?

Now I'm living in a 4 bedroom condo with 2 other students and the 2 owners. 5 in all. I think it's kinda like the Real World, except we're all poor and it's in the barrio and we never see or talk to each other. But it's going okay.

I never had any huge issues with either of my roomates...however I've had some interesting experiences with each of them.

Roomate #1 was a girl I knew from high school. We were in a lot of classes together, and had a lot of similar interests. We were friendly, but not close friends. So we figured being roomates, we wouldn't kill each other, but maybe we'd become friends. Things went well except for one night, when she was out late with a boyfriend that her parents didn't know too much about, and they called really really late at night (knowing that they'd find only me there). They proceeded to grill me about their daughter's whereabouts! It took all my tact and diplomacy to calm them down without upsetting them, or letting them know anything that was my roomate's to tell. They were quite inquisitive and persistent - I finally had to tell them that I needed to go to sleep, that I had a test the next morning.

Roomate #2 was a trip! She was a foreign student with relatives in the state. I helped her set up a portable fax machine in our room, so that she could get faxes from her parents (instead of long phone calls). These she got daily. It wouldn't have been too big a deal, except we quite figured out how to turn the sound off on the machine. And her parents always sent faxes at 6AM our time...she usually wasn't around to get them (either she was out partying, or up before dawn to pray or study)so I'd have to get the fax. I never needed to set my alarm, I always just waited for the fax. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

Actually, now that I think about it, I really liked both my roomates. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

BUT I never liked my boyfriend's ex-roomate! With good reason, too. The guy is a terror. (And you thought my roomate stories were going to be sickeningly positive! *LOL*)

A few words about the roomate: he lies. But for those who don't know him, he's extremely convincing. He also delves uninvited into the other peoples' personal lives. He tries to play matchmakes with resounding failure. He attempts to run everything - whether it's homework groups or club events - as if it's a military exercize. He's disprespectful and disparaging of everyone and everything, unless they (1) represent an authority figure to him, or (2) he thinks they might be a source of income to him (ie. the only people he never disparages are (1) an adjunct professor in our College who's ex-military, and (2) the College's scholarship officer). The only time he's respectful to his parents, girlfriend, friends, etc. are when he wants something from them (most of the time, money). I did not know this at the time that I first met him. I also did not know that in spite of being a sweet, kind person, his girlfriend thought he could do no wrong - it was always "someone else's fault," no matter what the situation, or how blatantly obvious it was the roomate's fault.

The roomate and his girlfriend were good friends of my boyfriend. I actually met my boyfriend through them (at the time, I was casually dating the girlfriend's cousin - confusing yet? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif). I sorta hit it off with my now-boyfriend, and we started hanging out a few months later (I was no longer dating the girlfriend's cousin).

The roomate did not like that at all, and neither did his girlfriend. I think the girlfriend was hoping I'd get back together with her cousin. I think the roomate was hoping the same thing, but for ulterior motives - I think he was interested in my now-boyfriend! (This is speculation, of course, but I'd be willing to bet the farm on this.)

Between those two - the roomate and the girlfriend - they did everything in their power to prevent anything from happening, to the point of putting their nose much further into either of our personal lives than is decent (even if either of us were inclined to share!). It became unbearable to spend any time at the apartment that my boyfriend and his roomate shared - even if we stopped by to get a snack, either his roomate or the girlfriend were there, and just stared at us while we went about our business. (That was another issue - the roomate had given his girlfriend a key to their apartment without consulting my boyfriend, but if I wanted to go there with my boyfriend, he had to call his roomate ahead of time and OK it with him first!) At some point, the roomate talked to my boyfriend, and the girlfriend talked to me about their "concerns" about the two of us, and how they felt it was in our best interests to stop seeing each other.

It became more and more sordid and weird...my boyfriend and I were pelted with accusations - mostly by the girlfriend (who was repeating what the roomate told her to). The most amazing thing was that she and the roomate were judging my "relationship" with my boyfriend (it could hardly be termed that at the time, we had barely been dating), and the roomate and she had much *worse* relationship problems.

Suffice it to say, my boyfriend basically moved out within a week of all this tomfoolery occurring, and found his own place.

Oh yeah, and my fiance and I are still together, thank you very much! The ex-roomate and the girlfriend are not!
