Question about Disaffiliation and Other Sororities
 

I joined a local sorority that in the beginning seemed like an answered prayer but in the end was completely falling apart and turning on its members. As a result I disaffiliated last quarter. At the same time I miss the sisterhood and the times before it began falling apart. That made me wonder about other sororities. I'm not to sure if disaffiliated members of local sororities can join into other ones or if there are grad school sororities. Can anyone offer any information or advice?

I'm curious as to why you introduced yourself in the Sigma Kappa forum?

Maybe she wants to join SigKap and went there for advice on their national policy on disaffilated locals?

Well, I was going to say I guessed she saw the title of the SK thread that's something along the lines of "New GCers Post Here First" and she may not have realized it was in a specific GLO's forum.

But then I read the links in your post, OTW, and see the possible history link with SK and now I'm thinking "hmmmmm....."

To the OP, I don't know all the ins and outs, but my understanding is that as long as you haven't initiated into an NPC sorority, you are still eligible to rush them. I would guess that rushing other locals would totally depend on the locals' own rules. If you want to rush NPC, plan to do it while you're a fulltime undergraduate student. However, I think there are opportunities to join service/social sororities at any age, that could always be an option. Sorry things didn't work out with your local and good luck with whatever you choose to pursue.

OP, if it means anything, prior to joining my sorority, I pledged a local. During the pledgeship, I realized that their idea of "sisterhood" was not something I wanted to be a part of...so I depledged. The following semester, I met a group of wonderful girls who convinced me to check out an Alpha Gam rush event. The rest is history.

Stick around GC a while, and make sure to read up on the threads about the different kinds of sororities. One of them might just be the one you're looking for.

When I replied to that post I didn't realize it was in a specific forum. I saw the part about New GC'ers and responded from the link to new threads. It wasn't until later that I realized that it was in SK's forum. I have no specific interests in other houses but I do miss greek life.

So it is ok to join another sorority after disaffiliating from a local?

There are no national Panhellenic rules prohibiting joining another group after disaffiliating from a local. However, your college's Panhellenic may have such rules, especially if the local is a member or associate member of Panhellenic.

And even if there are no rules whatsoever, another group might not want to offer you a bid. And that's their prerogative.

An NPC sorority? In a word, yes. Other locals or NPHC sororities may have differents restrictions.

The one I was in was local while I was there. It was not a part of Pan because of its size although they do have a representative attend the meetings and the sorority does participate in most other Greek events.
