VA Gun Law killed; Loophole still open

RICHMOND, Jan. 18 -- A Virginia House committee on Friday likely killed for this year an effort to close a major loophole in the state's gun laws that was a priority of Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D).

The House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee voted to indefinitely delay action on a bill that would to require all sellers to conduct background checks on those who want to purchase firearms at gun shows.

The decision by the committee, which is controlled by Republicans from rural parts of the state, followed a hearing in which several relatives of the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre testified in favor of the proposal.

For years, gun-control advocates have tried to close the so-called gun show loophole in Virginia.

Federal and Virginia laws require licensed gun dealers to screen customers through instant background checks. In Virginia, felons, mentally ill people and people convicted of domestic abuse are not allowed to buy firearms. But the state does not require background checks for people who buy guns in private sales at gun shows.

I know there are some VA Tech people that aren't happy about this...

I am not a Va Tech person, but I live in Virginia. This sucks! It isn't like they are taking away your right to own a gun. They are just trying to keep them out of the hands of the mentally ill (mostly), like what's-his-nuts who was responsible for the shootings.
