COB - Getting an invite
I just found out, through my Office of Greek Life, that one of my favorite chapters on campus (let's call it Derby Days) is holding COB during the spring semester. However, there are not many spots available so it's by an invitation only basis. One of my hallmates is in Derby Days and we are on very good terms (we've hung out in groups and watched TV together) but we are not best friends. I know that sisters of Derby Days may invite women to COB and I would be so excited to get an opportunity. Is there a tactful way for me to express my interest to my hallmate without sounding like I'm begging for an invite?

This sounds cheesy, but in this case you really have to just be yourself.
It's important not to be unnatural or fake. FOR EXAMPLE: If you all of a sudden start acting like "OMG _______ you're my best buddy, let's go to the mall, or Starbucks, or something!" she's probably just going to get weirded out (or know that you just want a COB invite). Or if you start asking 3,787,669,344 questions about Derby Days or Derby Days COB, she is also going to know (and possibly get freaked out). Just hang out like you normally would, say hi to her when you see her (if you normally would), and if she thinks you might be a good fit with Derby Days, she'll invite you. |
I think it depends on how close you are, and if she knows that you're interested in joining Derby Days. If you feel comfortable, you could just say to her "You know, I heard Derby Days is doing COB. I know how much you love being a Derby Days and I was wondering if there's any way I could get an invite for a COB event."
If that seems too forward or you guys aren't really on those terms, maybe you could let it drop to her that you're interested in recruitment and would love to hear a little bit about her experiences in Derby Days. Do NOT mention that you already know Derby Days is holding COB, because then she'll know you're interested in an invite and she'll feel pressured. Having a conversation about Greek life will definitely put inviting you to COB in the front of her mind. Like KSUViolet said, if your friend thinks you'll be a good fit, she'll invite you. |
