deadbear80's niece's recruitment story

My niece is rushing at a school on the East Coast this semester. I'm very excited for her (and surprised...I had no idea until yesterday she was even considering it!). It is Formal Recruitment. She is a sophomore and transferred there this past fall.

The chapters at her school are:
Delta Delta Delta
Alpha Chi Omega
Kappa Alpha Theta
Chi Omega
Sigma Delta Tau
Phi Sigma Sigma
Alpha Phi
Sigma Kappa

I have decided to name them after the 8 schools of the Division III UAA (University Athletic Association) Conference (since her father and I went to one of them ;) ). In no particular order:

Brandeis
Carnegie Mellon
Case Western
Emory
NYU
U of Chicago
Rochester
Wash U

She is a legacy to one of these chapters--WashU--through her Aunt (my sister). She is also a legacy to 2 other sororities, but neither with houses on this campus (at least now).

***Note: If you know what school this is I would ask that you NOT say anything. Not even a 'I think I know what school this is'. I personally hate when people say that. Good for you if you know; please keep it to yourself. If that happens, I will ask the mods to pull this thread. I'm not trying to be rude--or a bitch--but it's ridiculous how many threads get ruined these days.

I will hopefully get updates from her as much as possible. She does not start rush until a couple of days from now.

Yay! A thread with SigKap! Good luck to your niece. I'll pick Carnegie Mellon to root for because I love Pittsburgh.

I will also be rooting for the Tartans as a proud alumna!

And of course I'm rooting for Carnegie Mellon, too!

Even though many of my family are CMU graduates, I'll be different and pull for Emory!

And we have our 1st update!

DBN--Deadbear's niece :) started Open Houses today. They went to 4 houses: NYU, Emory, U of Chicago, and Case Western. The remaining 4 (Rochester, Wash U, Brandeis, and Carneige Mellon) she'll see tomorrow.

She thought NYU and EMORY were very similar chapters, however she thought Emory was a little more put together and she got a nicer feeling about their house as a whole. She thought at both chapters conversation was a little fake and forced, but she realizes that Recruitment conversations can be a little forced and repetitive (as we all know as well!).

DBN knows girls from U OF CHICAGO since one went to high school with her. I think DBN had high hopes from this chapter since she knows girls in this house and gets along well with the girl she went to high school with. Sadly, it seemed to let her down a little. DBN attributed her feelings to being put in a corner while she was there. It definitely made her uncomfortable. She did say, however, that she would be willing to give them a second chance since she does like the girls she knows in the house.

DBN last visited CASE WESTERN. She thought it was the least impressive of the 4 houses she saw today, but she thought it may also have been that she was really tired. At DBN's school, they started classes this week and have Recruitment on top of it--so I'm sure both the PNMs and the chapter members are in for very long days and nights! At this house one girl she was talking to seemed to keep trying to pawn her off to girls she had already talked with. It turned DBN off a bit. DBN also thought each girl in the house kept feeding her the same canned line about sisterhood and being involved and how much they loved their house. DBN said that while it was probably true--it was hard to hear the exact same thing for a half-hour over and over again; especially with it being the last house of the day.

Hope to have more for you hungry rush-story-feeding folks tomorrow! :)

We were always told as actives to never put the PNM in a corner. I thought that was pretty universal recruitment etiquette at most schools. Maybe the sister forgot (which is easy to do).

Nobody puts DBN in a corner! (sorry, couldn't resist)

Aw! You beat me to it! Great minds (or warped, whichever,) think alike! ;)

I guess we're all riding the warped-mind train, then. When I read that in the post, that's the quote I immediately thought of. I can't wait to hear more!

We have another update...although sadly it's not very good. I was hoping DBN would give me more detail when she sent me an email today; but she didn't.

DBN visited the remaining 4 houses (Wash U, Brandeis, Carneige Mellon and Rochester) yesterday. It seems as though she had a good time at all 4 houses. I'm sure after the first set of Open Houses she knew more of what to expect.

The next round of parties isn't until Saturday, but she will apparently be getting her schedule tonight. She can go back to a maximum of 6. I don't know which 6 she ranked as a #1 (She had to rank 6 #1, 1 #2 and 1 #3); but you all will know when I do! I'll hopefully be able to give you an update on which ones she gets invited back to tonight.

It's so hard to be waiting and waiting for information and then not get much from her! Now I know how all of you Moms feel when waiting for information from your daughters. I don't know how you guys do it!

Overall, I think DBN is just hoping for a full schedule and lots of choices. I did remind her that it's not about a full schedule--it's about finding someplace you click (and you only need one!).
