I'm starting recruitment at the end of this week and I have some last minute questions.

I'm rushing at a mid-sized university in the south, and while that worried me at first, after speaking with a girls in sororities I was told that recommendations weren't necessary and rushing definitely wasn't as big of a deal as it would be at a state school. So anyway, I'll be rushing as a sophomore AND a transfer, I'm really bummed I didn't go to this school from the start because I'm really starting to want to be in a sorority. There are around 60-70 upperclassmen rushing and there 8 or 9 sororities. I heard from someone that the sororities can only accept a certain percent of upperclassmen (I heard 5%, but she wasn't sure, does that sound right?)

Anyway, if that IS the case, since I don't really know anyone to begin with, are there any tips for getting myself noticed and standing out as a transfer so that maybe I can get a bid? I'd really like to be involved at my new school and the sorority girls I've met so far have been so great. Any advice?

Sororities can bid as many upperclassmen as they want. If they want to take an entire pledge class full of seniors, that's their business. There are absolutely no written rules dictating what class status new members must have, although sororities often prefer to bid freshmen as they'll be around longer. What you are more likely referring to is "free" juniors and seniors - the sororities are allowed take a certain amount of juniors and seniors and it doesn't count against quota.

does knowing (good friends with) the president of a sorority give you a big lift during recruitment in relation to bids?

Not necessarily.... more than one person has to like you/see potential in you.
