Slavery Theme Park

If this was more along the lines of a museum then I could understand, but a theme park? I mean really - the word theme park conjures up images of cotton candy, rides, lots of walking, and a good time - not a lesson of social injustice.

I can "kind" of see that they are going for a "living museum" experience but to call it a theme park just cheapens the purpose and clouds their mission IMO.

So what next - go to Poland and pretend to be gassed??? Maybe go to Ireland and starve for a few days to understand their plight during the Potato famine - or to Vietnam and be treated like a POW - to France and be a Huguenot? to Rome and be a persecuted Christian?? Huh???

tld221 01-09-2008 11:09 PM

does anyone remember the Tunnel of Oppression that was being done all over college campuses in the past few years? i think its in the same vein (well obviously over the top) of experiential learning.

i HATED having to run the booths in the exhibit - for example, binding someone's hands with rubber bands and making them pick up coins, then exclaiming "see! look how hard that was! this is what its like for disabled people! now take the rubber bands off!"

come on, really guys? we're all even stevens now?

*gasp* NOOooooooooooooooo!!!!! That is the dumbest a$$ idea I have EVER heard. At least it sounds like they are still pretty far away from having enough funding to even get this off the ground. So far, they've only raised enough to purchase 1/2 the land they'll even need. (although I'm sure the article is part of a p.r. ploy to get money dropping into the coffers at a faster rate )

While I would hope that the people behind this project (Americans Ron and Carla Bluntschli) have the best of intentions, I just can't see this being done with any dignity. Taking "slaves" to auction - they couldn't possibly get away with what really went on.

They need to take a page from the Holocaust Museum, which immerses tourists in the horrors, without demeaning them any further.

That is EXACTLY what I was just about to come in here and say. So, I am in full agreement with you, Honeykiss.

This sounds like something we did on campus, but it was called "Boxes and Walls." There was a theme and a lesson to be learned in each room. For example you had the language barrier room, the gay/lesbian room, the handicapped room, the homeless room, the African American experience room, etc. It was actually very interesting.

Maybe these people could just visit the Underground Railroad Museum in Cincy instead??

Who would pay to be treated like a slave?? Wait, don't answer that...

yeah only 12 hours? maybe that's all their business plan to get the money up allows for...

and many colleges do the "Tunnel of Oppression/Boxes and Walls" replication to "open the campus' eyes to various disparities." the bad thing on our campus, is that it became a HUGE joke to students and would go just to see the student actors and get their jollies.

then all SORTS of people started claiming being "oppressed." ie. "omg, this fire drill sucks, i cant wash the conditioner out of my hair, im sooooo oppressed!"

true story guys.
