SMU Recruitment

Who can tell me about SMU recruitment? My daughter's friend is going through in January. I got her recs for all the houses, but know little about the process there. She was told by panhellenic that they do not need sponsorships at SMU. However, being a southern school, I found that hard to believe. Any words of wisdom out there? Anything I should give her a heads up about? She is from another state and this will be her first exposure to the greek world. I just want this to be a positive experience for her.

SMU is very competitive. She will need recs, particularly being from out of state. I'm sure you will find more information by using the Search Function.

Anyone more familiar with SMU correct me if I am wrong....

I doubt that being out of state would negatively affect a PNM's chances because SMU is private, so about half of the students are from out of state. It's not like Bama, for example, where you have to have connections with all the XYZs in Birmingham to stand a chance.

Plus, their recruitment is deferred, so PNMs and sorority members have at least one semester to get to know each other in a more authentic way, and the members don't feel they have to "pick out" their pledge class over the summer based on who they know from their hometowns.

However, I think recs are important for a PNM to be competitive.

Except the search function doesn't do 3-letter words like "SMU" or phrases together like "Southern Methodist".

I go to SMU! Recruitment is competitive, but not unmanageable at all! It will help that she has recs, but I know girls who had a successful recruitment and ended up in their chapter of choice without a rec... but they are very important at SMU and it will make her recruitment easier with the recs you got her, even though they are not required - that was awesome of you!

Being out-of-state will not hurt her chances. Like violetpretty said, this is a private school and 50% of students are out of state.

She will do fine! Recruitment at SMU is actually not so bad because she will know girls going in. I wish her the very best!!! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions I didn't answer here.

I got hits when I put "southern methodist" in the search function -- here's a thread from the 2006 recruitment that provides some commentary, Gator... http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...hern+methodist

Thanks so much everyone. I guess what I really want to know is the pledge rate at SMU. If a pnm goes to all the invited parties, and attends at least one Preference is she guaranteed a bid? I know this was been talked about on other threads in the fall. Some schools allow houses to go over quota/total in order to assure as many women as possible are able to join a glo. Other campuses seem to draw the line in the sand and allow no flexibility with numbers. Does anyone know what the stance is at SMU? Does anyone have any idea as to the number of pnms?

^^^You'll probably need to PM SMUAlphaChi, above, or contact the campus Office of Greek Life for those kinds of specifics...

FWIW, if you go on Google and select 'Advanced Search', type SMU in Find Results and then greekchat.com in Domain and it'll bring up all GreekChat.com threads containing SMU...so yes, there is a way.

Good to know. I always get frustrated when I want to search for something with 3 letters.

Thanks for all your help. I have been PM a Greekchat member and had many of my questions answered. I really appreciate all your help.
