tis the season to be sigma

Ok so the sisters of gamma psi are already making plans for formal recruitment for fall 08. The theme will be tis the season to be sigma. We will be having holiday themed parties. One will be Halloween and one Christmas. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for skits or songs or anything?

If a sorority put that skit on when I was rushing, I would have dropped out of recruitment altogether and they couldn't have paid me to join.

Weird post deleted!

This is a really interesting theme, but it has the potential to be really hard to pull off without sounding/looking too cheesy. Which other holidays are you using?

Anyway, check out the Songs Sigmas Sing book, I there might be some holiday songs changed to have Sigma lyrics in it (I mean, if they have Disney movie songs, they probably have those).

If you can't find them then I guess your chapter will just have to get creative and make it up themselves.

Skit idea:

Note: my school did not have skits, so excuse me if this is totally dumb.

You could have a girl who hangs out at the Sigma house, goes home and wishes on the night before Christmas to be a Sigma, and wakes up to find letters under the tree and a knock at the door. When she opens the door, she is greeted by her new sisters.

I had that same thought, KSUViolet.

I also wondered if a Christmas theme might make it too easy to fall into one of the dreaded "B" conversations (Bible, specifically).

Maybe you could throw out some completely unusual holidays (like Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day - January 28; or Teach your Daughter to Volunteer Day - February 2). For other ideas, check out this calendar of Official 2008 Holidays:

Don't get me wrong... I love the idea of the holiday theme. I just know someone from my chapter would've said something like, "What'd you get for Christmas last year?" To which a PNM could've said, "Well... I'm Jewish." Cue awkward silence.

Good luck!

I think that could be a great chance for a sister to jump in with "Wow, I've always wondered what Hanukkah is like. Can you tell me a little bit about the customs?"

Yes, it treads towards the dreaded "Bible no-no", but I think if you keep it more historical and less religious, you'd be fine.

I'd be careful with this.

I am a practicing Christian and feel that not only is the idea of a Christmas themed skit questionable on the grounds that it might alienate PNMs who practice other religions, it has the potential to offend Christians too. What about a more secular holiday, like Valentine's (I Fell in Love With Tri Sigma) or Thanksgiving (I'm Thankful for Tri Sigma)? I could even see a cute skit with Take Your Daughters to Work Day (something along the lines of "I want to be a Sigma just like Mom"--except with Mom as the Sigma collegians, and the PNMs see what kind of great experiences the Collegian Sigma has and want to follow in her footsteps.)

Good luck for a successful Fall 08 recruitment!

What about one party with all the holidays combined? Having multiple "holidays" over the week might sound cute but I'm not sure the PNMs would be into it. Plus are you going to have more than one day to really have a theme? I would ask the Greek life office what the week is going to consist of before you make plans- you might have a mandated philanthropy or slideshow day where a "theme" really wouldn't fit.

You may want to check with your alumnae. I recall hearing about your chapter doing a Christmas themed skit about 10 years ago.

Sigmagirl447, if your post was for me, I think you missed my point, which was that anything remotely close to the three Bs (Boys, Bank, Bible) has the potential to be a touchy subject and therefore should be thought through extremely thoroughly.

As for my chapter, just because they did something in the past does not make it correct to do it now. What is appropriate changes, and people make mistakes. I'm unaware of them having done a Christmas skit, and hey, if they did, it could have been great--just like if the OP did a skit with the utmost care and consideration, it could also be great.

I'm just saying that putting extra thought into what may or may not be offensive never hurts, and that's doubly true with religion!

I meant for the original poster to check with her alumnae about how a Christmas themed skit went in the past. Sorry if it seemed as though my post was a response to you. *hugs*
I agree that anything remotely related to a Christian based holiday is skirting a fine line.
