How Are the Sororities at....
 

Hi to all! My two junior daughters are winnowing down their college choices...one will go to Valdosta, I think, and the other to Georgia Tech, Mercer, Emory, or Birmingham Southern. Can anyone tell me about the sororities at the last 4 schools? All I've heard is that a lot of girls get cut at Tech and Emory because there aren't enough groups.

I don't know anything about those schools, except that Emory just got a chapter of SDT opened in the past fall. Maybe that helps a little.

I know that the sorority chapters at Emory are very strong. This past summer I interned with the president of Tri-Delt there. From what she told me, I remember her saying that her chapter had about 150 members, and that that wasn't unusual.

If I am thinking of the right school, Birmingham Southern has only two sororities - Chi Omega and Alpha Gamma Delta. A girl I went to high school with is a XO there. And can I ask a question. Why Birmingham Southern??? It is tiny, especially Emory and GA Tech (I don't know anything about Mercer). But it is a prestigious school.

Hi, Allie! BSC has 6 sororities- that much I know- AXO, AOPi, XO, KD, Pi Phi (yea!), and ZTA. I just don't know anything about Greek life there--if it's important or if most rushees get bids and so forth. She'd be a legacy to Pi Phi and AOPi.

I didn't know why Birmingham Southern until we talked to some recruiters and students and saw the catalog and video and I am majorly impressed!!!

I must be thinking of somewhere else then. Maybe Huntingdon??? As I guess you can tell, I wasn't real close to the girl that goes there - wherever there is. Birmingham Southern is a great school, I just couldn't handle such a small place. What is your daughter's ultimate career goal?

She wants to go into pediatrics, Allie, and as the second of 13 kids she has the real life experience with children to be an ace pediatrician! I don't believe I would've been able to take a small school either--some of us just need the continual excitement of a big school!

Jen, I'd heard that the Tri Delts were great at Emory too. I wonder if Emory has one of those situations in which a few of the sororities are desperately wanted by lots of rushees and you end up with a few big sororities and a few tiny ones? I personally witnessed that at one school where 2 sororities were really old and the other 7 were new and it was rough trying to guide rushees to the 7 new ones.

I know my sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, has a chapter at Georgia Tech. I've met several of the sisters from that chapter and they are fantastic - really down to earth, fun, friendly. From what I understand, there are more fraternities than sororities, mainly because the school is so overwhelmingly male, that the sororities at Ga. Tech all enjoy a relatively high level of popularity.

I know when I was in high school and visiting colleges, I ***definitely*** enjoyed the attention at Georgia Tech. The female students have so many more guys to choose from that the guys know that they have to be nice or the girls will just move on!

I work at Emory so I may be able to find out some information for you. I am not actually on campus, and have very little to do with student life so I can't give you my personal take on everything, but I do know a couple of people in the Campus Life office and a recent graduate of Emory (although she wasn't greek). I'll see what I can dig up for you!

Not to be too self promoting, but has she though about the University of South Alabama?? We have a really great Honor's Student Program (of which I am a part) and we have one of the best Pre-Med programs. I am not in the Pre-Med program myself, but a lot of my HP friends are. One of the best things about the university is that they don't allow grad students to teach (although they can teach labs). Anyway - USA is a good school and not too large or too small. And compared to the cost of the other schools you are looking at (I was considering Emory for a while), it is a bargain! I can't help you on the whole greek life thing at those schools. But for the daughter who will be pre-med, I have some advice.

My school cranks out so many pre-med students it's insane! But what I've learned from our provosts and our med school admissions is that med schools would rather take a student with a 4.0 in history over a student w/ a 3.7 in biology. So just as long as the student still takes the required courses for admission is does not matter what the BA/BS is in!

SoCal - you're right in one regard, as the major of choice for med schools is relatively unimportant (the #1 major catagory for incoming med students last year, according to US News: art/music) . . . however, don't discredit the usefulness of the math/science GPA - for med school you do submit a separate math/science/lab work gpa, and (according to the med schools and advisory staff i've talked to) this is weighed heavily for potential candidates. So don't worry about major per se, but also it's more than necessary to perform well in the requireed math and science courses for med school, from what i've been told. hope this helps!

That's great! I loved AP Bio - that's in part why I continue to take zoology classes in college, even though I'm not pursuing med school anymore. I'm taking Genetics this semester, with a professor who is very articulate and very passionate about the subject. I enjoyed AP Chem as well, though I think we learned more on our own in that class than from our teacher...he was more intent on preparing us for life, than for the AP Exam, I think.... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif

KSig RC/Rob, I have to agree with you - while I was still doing pre-med, the one comment I heard was that I had nothing to worry about in terms of preparing for the rigors and analytical aspects of med school. Apparently, the chemical engineering curriculum really prepares you, because it's got lab work galore - and if there's one thing I've learned as a ChemE student, it's how to think analytically and critically! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
