Help Please!
 

Hello everyone! I'm new to the land of GreekChat.com, but I think this is a really cool site. My sister is in a sorority and I am planning on rushing in the fall. Anyway, I writing article on sororities and I was hoping people on here could help me (so I don't have to scout hundreds of websites). I am looking for any information on sorority firsts, sorority milestones, or anything that is unique to your organization. For example: My sister (Chi O) said her sorority has the most membership of any female organization, besides the Girl Scouts. Thanks in advance! I will check back often and hopefully post under some other topics!

I would recommend doing some searches on different national webpages. I know that www.chiomega.com lists our facts and first. I also recommend AOII's webpage which is at www.alphaomicronpi.org because it's done beautifully. Otherwise you can pretty much bet that each national webpage will list the achievements of each organization.

Here's some stuff about AGD...
- first NPC established with the intent of becoming a national organization
- first NPC to establish a national philanthropy
- first NPC to establish central central offices and international head quarters
- first NPC to establish an executive council structure
- first NPC ro initiate a non-caucasian member
- has the widest span of chapters, from Nova Scotia to Hawaii
- has the most internet chapter & alumnae websites

ZTA was the first to have a National Housing Corporation and it is the model that is used by almost all national groups that have such organizations.

To add on to Leslie's post:

• Alpha Gamma Delta is the first NPC organization to colonize and establish a chapter in the state of Hawaii (my chapter!).
• AGD is the first women's fraternity to set a minimum GPA requirement that all chapters must attain.
• AGD has the largest presence in Canada with SEVEN active chapters.
• the non-Caucasian member Leslie spoke about, Diana Lam, was initiated in the U of British Columbia chapter in 1953. Sigma Kappa initiated Barbara Delaney, an African-American, in 1957.

This is not about my sorority, but Sigma Sigma Sigma was the first NPC to have a shortened new member period.

Sigma Sigma Sigma is also the first NPC organization to establish a collegiate chapter in Europe!

Hopefully, the Eta Mu chapter at the University of Maryland-Mannheim, in Mannheim, Germany can pave the way for more GLOs to establish chapters in Europe!

According to our national website - Alpha Phi has seven active Canadian chapters too (assuming UBC hangs in there http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif ) We also have the longest continual presence in Canada with the Xi chapter at the University of Toronto standing since 1907. But heh, much love for the Syracuse Triad (A-Phi, Gamma Phi, AGD). I've noticed we seemed to expand in similar patterns.

Regina - Since you're looking for more house pride here's some Alpha Phi facts:
* We built the first Sorority chapter house. It was at Alpha Chapter - Syracuse.
* First sorority to use travelling delegates.

I'd have to check a website to come up with more but those are the biggest three.

Veruca, thank you soooo much for mentioning the Syracuse Three! I can't believe I forgot about that.

In addition to the Syracuse three (Alpha Gamma Delta, Gamma Phi Beta, and Alpha Phi), there are other campuses that hold the distinction of having multiple organizations established first on their campus.

Wesleyan Female College; Macon, Georgia:
Alpha Delta Pi, Phi Mu...the oldest and second oldest Greek organizations for women

Longwood College; Farmville, Virginia: Alpha Sigma Alpha, Kappa Delta, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Zeta Tau Alpha..."The Longwood Four"

DePauw University; Greencastle, Indiana:
Alpha Chi Omega, Kappa Alpha Theta

Monmouth College; Monmouth, Illinois:
Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi

Barnard College; NYC:
Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Omicron Pi

The first 'sorority' was the Adelphian Society, founded at Wesleyan College in Macon, GA in 1856. This later became Alpha Delta Pi.

A year later, the Philomuthean Society was founded at the same college - this later became Phi Mu.

Gamma Phi Beta, I believe, was the first to use the term "Sorority" - all before them were/still are known as "women's fraternities."

Here are our Kappa Alpha Theta Facts:
- We are the First Greek Letter Fraternity Known Among women, there were Women's organizations and groups, but they didn't call themselves Greek until after Theta did, we started as Greeks

-The first women admitted to Phi Beta Kappa were Thetas.

-The first women's fraternity to establish a chapter in Canada was Kappa Alpha Theta.

-The first woman elected to the U.S. Senate in her own right was a Theta.

I think you may only be interested in NPC organizations, but if not, here's some interesting stuff about my Fraternity, Phi Beta, which is a member of the Professional Fraternity Association (PFA)

• Originally founded as a Women's Fraternity for Speech & Music in 1912, we quickly grew to embrace all art forms. We are the only national GLO (Greek Letter Organization) that incorporates all of the creative & performing arts, including their histories & therapies.
• In 1976-77 we became co-ed
• A Phi Beta, Mary Elin Frohmader, was the first president of PFA
• We were founded with the premise of promoting arts through service, although we are not technically a "service fraternity", as well as for professional networking.
