Facebook App for Party Sign In Sheets
Hey guys,
I created a tool for our chapter that you may find handy. Have your social chair, or whoever creates the events on facebook for your parties, add this application. Then whenever party time comes goto http://apps.facebook.com/guestlister/ and bam! you have an alphabetically sign in sheet with pictures for your party. In ZAX, Tim |
This very cool...
And from Kettering -- who would've thought that?? :-) |
Yup, we'll spend 10 hours solving a 1 hour problem... just as long as we don't have to do anything manually :)
Any feedback is appreciated and will be considered! |
And why not Kettering? It's an engineering school! And engineers NEVER do it the simple way. Kettering, MIT, GT, all those guys!
Now at Berkeley, it would have been "Hey man, whatever" Quote:

You may have spent 10 hours solving the 1-hour problem, but you have to look at the big picture (something engineers are notorious for OVERlooking...right Mr. Gezelius?). Your ten hours can benefit the 200 chapters 1-hr each use....Your hours spent are definitely giving back a positive return.
I'm sure other fraternities will get their hands on it as well...it's the gift that keeps on giving! Now, at STLCOP - each student entering would be required to state the chemical name of a random Trade Name product (ie. Claritin = loratadine). That way we could verify that they actually go to STLCOP...:-) PS - suggestion - does it have a function for the rare college student that shuns facebook? What about an input field for a "student ID" code -- but security might be an issue created there. PPS - Yes, John...I called you Mr. Gezelius to try and make you feel old...tee hee hee |
I'll have you know that I made my living as a QA Engineer at Texas Instruments in the early eighties. I have an MBA and was heavily into statistics.
Every three or four years there is a "silver bullet" for management that claims to be the solution to all problems. In the early eighties it was SPC: Statistical Process Control. Some Army General had it written into all Army contracts as a requirement and all the contractors had to go out and hire a biblical host of statisticians. I was one of 'em. To me engineering requires bib overalls, a red bandana, goggles, and a pin-stripped locomotive driver's hat but yea, verily, TI called me an engineer. Law school came later when I figured out that the TI lawyers made more $$$ than the QA engineers. Quote:

Oh, wait a minute. I majored in biology. Never mind. You may be right after all. |
Just curious, wouldn't publishing a party list online be available for HQ to look at?
|
Well, it doesn't publish it anymore than the current Facebook guest list does.
Basically, it says temporarily give me everyone who has RSVP'd and said they are coming or may come and give them to me in one spot and sorted alphabetically by last name, the program is designed to only give you the option of showing guest lists for parties of which you are the creator. I can add a "write in feature" with a drop down for how many write in's you'd like. This tools helps with a few of the biggest problems we have with our parties. 1) No one ever submits a list the epsilon and if they do, it's the over-zealous sophomore who thinks everyone one of his friends from HS is coming 2) When we do get a list, no one can ever find their name since it's hardly ever sorted. So we end up with a list with 400 scribbles and who can blame the guys at the door for not making sure everyone finds their name or signs legibly when the line is to the street? 3) The guys at the door don't know everyone, so inevitably, people crash... not a big deal if it's random university students stopping by, can lead to problems when it's naredowell locals. So by adding the pictures, we can cross reference (hopefully) faces to pictures. |
Party crashers
Whether a random student from the university or a ne'er-do-well from the town, both are bad ju-ju.
If a party crasher gets through and something happens - and let's suppose that the crasher is NOT involved, a plaitiff attorney will request the guest list. We have to provide it. Plaintiff counsel will check all the names that he can against that list. If a name came up in a police report, say the crasher who wasn't involved (named Jones), the plaintiff attorney will says something like this: "Well you say you take precautions, you say that you screen the guests and have a guest list, then explain how Mr. Jones (not listed guest) happened to be at the party and be named as a police witness?" "I see, so your guest list procedure doesn't really keep out people who are not on the list, does it?" Jones may not have been involved, but his presence opens the door to questioning our control procedures. |
Interesting John.
I guess it's the same situation as giving birth control pills to 13 year olds. Sure, we want them to be protected, but at the same time, wouldn't that encourage them to have sex? Sure, guests lists can be good. But does it promote a false sense of security? And seriously guys, if you need a guest list, you're doing it ALL wrong. Hot chicks in, sausages out. It's that simple. |

*shakes head* if only we had random hot chicks to let in... you've never been to an engineering school in Flint, MI, the hot chicks (all 30 of them) are at our chapter before the party starts :D
while you've been able to present a great example of an instance where a guest list may not help, there are countless others where a guest list does save your ass and having an easy way to generate an organized, comprehensive guest list will free up time for brothers to focus on other aspects of hosting a successful and safe party. at least at kettering, the guest list is turned in by the epsilon after each party directly to our greek life adviser, having a neat guest list will make him happy and reflect positively on our party hosting skills as a whole; as i would guess is the case with most chapters a happy GL adviser makes life on campus for your chapter much easier. |
I am a firm believer in guest lists and believe that they must be enforced. A guest list that says "Brother Jones and 5 chicks" doesn't count. Nor does "!0 chicks from Fullerton JC" or "All the Tri-Delts, A Chi O's, and all the Pi Phis". We have to have definite names and I think that the Facebook idea has great merit.
And yes, I have seen "guest lists" for a 25 man chapter that, when added up, ran to over 325 names. Don't ask what my reaction was! |
What happened to this app? I just checked its page and it's nowhere to be found...
