Need Help with Inital Contact

I have decided to go AI and I want to contact my local chapter but after reading several posts on this forum, I am confused as to what I should say. Should I be very detailed or vauge? For example, should i simply tell them i am interested and ask for further information? Or should I tell them who I am, what I do, why I'm interested, etc (Bascially attaching a resume). Any Advice, examples, etc. I want to make sure I do not ruin my chances by saying too much or too little. PLEASE HELP!!!! i WANT TO CONTACT IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS. Thanks much!!

How can you be interested in a group if you don't know any of its members???

I knew I always wanted to pledge this sorority but when I went to college they were suspended the entire time. I just graduated last year and but never lost interest. I have 2 friends who are in the soriority (but both live out of 2 different states) and have told me to reach out to my local chapter. I was getting ready to do that until I discovered this forum and became second guessed my email to the local chapter. Do you have any advice.

Seriously, it is like someone has set out to hit every forum with as hot-button a post as possible; there's been a troll on NPC sorority rush (hitting the "big 3", drinking, race & hazing), a troll for NPHC fraternity rush, and now a troll planning to "cold call" for AI.

Hmmm... I'm sensing an inflammatory pattern. Somebody have a lot of time on their hands out there?

Suspended?

Just a guess, but is your username associated in ANY WAY to the sorority you want to be a member of? If so, I'd get a new username. ASAP. Then I'd visit the sorority's official website for more information. You might also want to pay a visit to their individual forum here as well.

My username was simply created because I am seriously "interested" joining. The sorority actually became active again on campus this past semester but I already graduated so I can't go through the college at this point. I have gone to the Sororities offical website but the only information provided is person to contact. The individual forum does not discuss recruitment. I just need simple advice on how to state my interest.

"Going AI" isn't really something you decide for yourself. You have to be invited by the sorority. Your decision is whether or not to accept their invitation for membership. Your out-of-state friends who are members should start this process for you, as it shouldn't be initiated by you. Initially it shouldn't matter that they live out of state.

What do you hope to accomplish should you be so lucky to be invited for membership with this sorority?

Good advice here :)

Ok, if the current members suggested you "reach out" to the local alum chapter, I suggest you send an email or make a phone call to whatever contact information is there and let them know about the discussion you had with your friends and that they suggested you contact them.

The chapter will let you know if a) you've crossed any inappropriate membership boundaries b) there's something else you need to do instead of contacting them such as showing up at their public events or c) arrange a meeting with them to talk about it.

Ask in innocence and you probably won't get a rude reply no matter what the content is. They can tell you how you should approach membership if at all.

I seriously don't know why we discourage people from just plain asking questions to the local chapters. They're big girls and can tell someone no.

OTW was hinting that it seems maybe you're interested in an NPHC sorority. If so, 90% of the people that respond to your question won't have the right advice for you. If you're interested in an NPHC sorority, follow OTW's advice. It's probably the most specific info you'll get.

I kind of got that vibe too...

BUT, if it is NPC...

If I had a friend in another state who wanted to AI (and I thought she'd be a good sister) - I would take it upon myself to send an email or make a phone call to the local Alum chapter President and say, "My friend Maria Maybesomebody is interested in meeting with your chapter. She is very interested in XYZ, and if she gets to know you ladies and likes your chapter, she may want to join. Are you willing to meet with her??". If you are GOOD FRIENDS with the two ladies out of state, ask them to do this for you.

Exactly what I was going to say. If they think you would make a great addition to their GLO, they should be doing it without even being asked.
