Police: Nine killed in shooting at Omaha mall, including gunman

CNN) -- A gunman killed eight people and wounded five others Wednesday at the popular Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska, before apparently turning the gun on himself, police said.

"We do not believe that we have any other shooter," said Sgt. Teresa Negron.

The shooting took place at the Von Maur store inside the shopping complex, which was locked down, the Nebraska State Patrol said.

Shoppers and employees walked out of the building with their hands up. Some described hiding in clothes racks and dressing rooms after hearing the shots.

I second that. I was just at that mall on Saturday, as it's only a few miles from where I live. This whole thing is just tragic.

Like the plot of the Tom Clancey book Teeth Of The Tiger, but the shooter(s) were terrorists.

What is sad, is that this is another young person who is left out of the family core.

We had one in K C at a shopping mall this last April, but only two were killed not counting the shooter.

No one thinks it can happen in smaller cities but it does!:o

Just like many other places, it seems family values are supposed to be the cause.:confused::eek:

I'm still trying to figure out how this happened. That mall has a "No Weapons" sign posted. It's a gun-free zone.

Remember, when seconds count, the police are only (six) minutes away.

Well . . . gun free zone doesn't mean you can't bring a gun, just that you can get in trouble for it.

Just remember, 6 minutes is a LONG time when you need help now.

Unfortunately, I've never seen a sign disarm anyone.

^^^^^^^^^^ "Hmmm..I think I will commit my murder suicide elsewhere..."

Uhhhhh...no...too bad it's not that easy.

Why is it not surprising that this young man, like the VT shooter, also as far as what's reported, has a history of mental illness. Makes one wonder what is going on and how these folk are getting their hands on weapons and killing innocent people.

It's going to be really interesting to find out how he managed to obtain an assault rifle.

It belonged to his stepfather who was out of town. Has that not made the national news? It was all over every media source here in Omaha within hours. They aren't sure where he got the ammunition though. Link to article...http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_pag...u_sid=10203759

Note to self: use satire icon

This is why those who are willing to invest the time should be permitted to carry weapons for self-defense and the defense of others. Nothing says an armed individual could have stopped this, or halted it sooner. But an unarmed individual has no chance.

See this "gun free zone" video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...arch&plindex=0
