Is D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution) considered a sorority also?
 

I remember the first time that I had heard of D.A.R. (http://www.dar.org/) was when I was reading "The Glass Menagerie" in English class and the mother has to run out to her D.A.R. meeting. And I was thinking, "What's DAR?" Now thanks to miracle of the Internet, I see that they have a website, so I could look it up and learn a bit more.

Is this kind of like a non-Greek letter sorority (sort of like Soroptimist Club, Lioness Club, etc.)? Would PEO be a similar organization? (I think PEO is non-political, but I went to www.peo.org and the link is donw)

Is this organization popular? Please feel free to comment, I always look forward to learning something new on the GC board.

I sang a capella in high school and every Christmas we carolled for the DAR - at least in my town they were a bunch of middle aged to elderly women... honestly, that is the extent of my knowledge.

I dunno if they are or not. In AJROTC, though, I got the DAR award, which is a pretty high accomplishment, so they must be pretty important.

I'm pretty sure to be in it you have to be related to someone who fought in the American Revolution, hence Daughters of the American Revolution.

My mom and I are doing the paperwork right now to become members. It is very very hard-tracing all your relatives to the Revolution and producing birth certificates or family bibles. Around here it is very prestigous to belong. There are chapters in most every town. The membership is exclusive, they pay dues, have meetings- but I don't think it is a sorority. Also, if anyone is interested- if you have family member who is already a DAR (grandmother, aunt, etc) then you can automatically become one too. Hope this helps!

The link to P.E.O. is now www.peointernational.org. It's so funny that you mention P.E.O. I was invited to an upcoming get-together (i.e. rush party) last night. It is similar to a sorority but they do not call themselves that. From what I understand, the proper name is The P.E.O. Sisterhood. The Sisterhood was founded in 1869 on the campus of Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Their primary focus is the education of women and they are the only organization of its kind to own and operate a college today, Cottey Junior College. I can't wait to get to know the members.

A bit of trivia for all you Greek history buffs. When P.E.O. decided to release their three collegiate chapters, early 1900s I think, the chapters were absorbed by Alpha Xi Delta!

LOL, yesterday I was watching the Gilmore Girls, and Emily (the mother of Lorelai) is part of the DAR.

It was portrayed as a very exclusive organization, yet one kind of snobbish, too?

I never picked up on the DAR reference in Glass Menagerie. But that makes me wonder. I've always understood that DAR is very exclusive/prestigious. Basically the way it was portrayed on Gilmore Girls, Newbie. But in the play, the family was; well, not what I'd picture as members of DAR. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif

I'm not 100% sure that it was in the Glass Menagerie, but it was DEFINITELY in one of my American Lit classes.....DAR was mentioned in one of the plays that we read.

Emily's the mom/grandmother from Gilmore girls; right? She is COMPLETELY how I'd pictrue a DAR member. Classy socialite from a family that I'd completely expect to be in The Register. The family from the Menagerie I wouldn't expect to be DAR because; from what I remeber, it's been 6 years; the mom was a total social climber. I envision members of DAR as not needing to climb anywhere. ::shrug::
