Eastern Washington SAE dragged to his death

I didn't see this posted on GC yet, but saw it on CNN.

Eastern Washington Student Dragged to Death

He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Eastern Washington.

OleMissGlitter 11-26-2007 06:50 PM

I think he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon though....at least the video said that....

Thanks for correcting me. I am going to try and catch a moderator to edit the title to the thread.

I saw this story on the news this morning, but I didn't realize he was a fraternity member.

Yet another reason why I don't want my boyfriend to go hunting! This story is just plain creepy!

This is so horrible - that poor kid . . .

For some many reasons this whole event is so sad and hard to understand.
From the following links, it would seem to be very far from clear cut, at this point, what happened, how and why:

I am not going to lose any sleep over the kid. He was a douchbag. I guess everyone missed the part about him threatening people with an ax.

SWTXBelle 11-28-2007 05:07 PM

So threatening someone is now punishable by the death penalty???? And not just any death - a particularly cruel one. I'm not saying he didn't deserve to be punished for his actions, but dragged to death? Far better to call the cops on him, I think.

Threatening with ax - very bad.
Killing - far worse.

LaneSig 11-28-2007 05:12 PM

Not to mention, if they managed to tie him up, they had already disarmed him or he would have cut the rope with his axe.
Plus, it was a hunting trip. If the guy was really threatening the others, they had rifles and could have shot him.

madmax 11-28-2007 05:54 PM

When someone brings an ax to a party it is time to take the gloves off. I think the kid got what he deserved. They probably should have shot him but they might not have had access to their guns.

Drolefille 11-28-2007 05:59 PM

If he was tied up, he could have been driven to wherever they needed to get a hold of the police, assuming they didn't have cell phones on them. I doubt that. Once someone is no longer a threat, you can't keep hurting them.

VandalSquirrel 11-28-2007 06:07 PM

This is from the Washington State University Daily Evergreen, and gives different information about the victim, a former student.

I can't imagine what a nightmare the trial will become, and can foresee it being moved to a different location on the west side of Washington State, much like the recent trial of the man who killed WSU students in an accident and fled the country.

Yes, you have the right to defend yourself if someone comes after you with an ax.

"They might not have had access to their guns." But, apparently the victim didn't have access to the ax at this point. Or, how would ONE man (or 2 or 3, it doesn't say) have been able to subdue a 'martial arts' guy, tie him up, and tie the rope to the trailer hitch?

Yes, you have the right to defend yourself. But, (help me out Kevin or one of the other lawyers on GC) it has to be reasonable force. If someone threatens to throw a rock at me, I cannot run him down with my car and claim self-defense. If they were able to tie his legs/ankles to a rope, why didn't they hog-tie him until he calmed down? If he wouldn't calm down, drive him to the nearest police/sheriff department. This is so clearly beyond the grounds of 'reasonable force', it is mind numbing.

As I posted before, right now it seems as if there is no real clear "black or white" to the "facts" of this tragic event. Just many shades of gray.

And there are facts that we will never know.

Shades of grey or no, what happened at the end was unacceptable.

Shades of grey only go so far.
