How Can Sisters Do this?
I am a student at LSU and a very proud member of Phi Mu Fraternity. In my communication studies class we were giving speeches about pro's or con's about a subject we knew much about about a weeks ago. A girl stood up and began giving a speech about Greek Life. Her speech, I thought was going to be about the Pro's of greek life. She began bashing sororities by saying all greeks do is drink and be sexually active with frat guys. I was hurt by this since I am greek. I felt rage and an urge to stand up for all of the great things greeks are involved in.
She then began trashing the AOPi name. Although I am not an AOPi I do know a few girls that I went to high school with that are AOPi's at a university about 30 miles from LSU and all the girls that i know are super duper sweet and very respectable. Since LSU does not have a AOPi chapter I asked her after class where she went. After she told me that she had transferred from another university in Louisiana I just couldn't believe she could turn on her sisters like that. She also said and I quote: "Why even pledge a sorority? Wow you have to oay to wear their letters and they will follow you from the day you get them until the day you die. People will judge you based off of that and the way people judge sorority girls isn't so pretty." I, on the other hand, am working on a speech that I have to present in front of a class of about 250 to 300 people. I am doing my final speech on the Pro's of greek life. Could I please have some feed back on what exacally have in my speech to counteract the damaging image she has put into motion for greek life. What should I do?!?! |
whatever you do, dont mention Snu-Snu or the ritual of 13 dildos. it wont help your case at all.

OMG! I read about that earlier! I will NOT be mentioning that! Thanks!

You could talk about the pros of Greek Life until you're blue in the face, but the truth is, people are still going to have a negative image of Greeks as long as the idiots out there keep on ruining it for us (hazing, alcohol, etc. etc.). That girl's just one of many. So she had a negative experience with AOPi. Did she say that she's an initiated member or was she a new member? Regardless, it's unfortunate she didn't get to feel a part of the AOPi sisterhood -- but if she feels strongly against it, then she's allowed to state why she's so passionately against it. You go to LSU. I don't know how many students are Greek on your campus, but judging from the vibe I got when I visited your campus a few years ago and also from everything I've read here, I know it's a system steeped in tradition -- and every year, incoming freshmen girls are just dying to become a part of that system. I doubt that some speech from some disgruntled member will change any of that. Let's assume that many of your Communication Studies classmates are Greek. Her speech probably fell on deaf ears anyway. Actions are more powerful than words, IMO. Continue to wear your letters proudly and promote a positive image on campus. Don't let some speech piss you off so much like that. |
She was iniated at a different university and then transferred to LSU. She's not origanally from LSU. I want to drop it but she doesn't seem like a greek. I am asking a friend today if she was ever an AOPi. I will get back to ya'll and let ya'll know and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

i totally agree with otw. you should just be proud. people dont know what their missing.

As OTW said, it's really unfortunate that this young woman didn't feel part of our sisterhood. Unfortunately, GLO members do and say things that those of us who take our Greek bonds seriously just can't comprehend at times. She was right about one thing though, we are often judged by the letters we wear. It's up to us to remember that what we say and what we do reflects upon ourselves, our letters, and how those letters are perceived by others.

It's unfortunate that she feels this way, but I honestly wouldn't trouble myself over it. LSU has one of the largest recruitments in the country every year and has a very Greek student body. I doubt her little speech is going to change anyone's opinions about wanting to join a sorority or make someone think twice about Greek Life if they've already pledged.

I talked to one of the AOPi's from where she "pledged" at. No one knows who she is or have ever heard of this girl. I heard from one of the girls that she rushed but was cut. I am just going to let it go and do my speech on Organ Donation. Thanks girls!

There are always going to be haters. The best thing you can do is live as a Phi Mu lady and you yourself set a good example.
I'm surprised that greeks don't get trashed even more than they already do. After seeing some myspace, facebook and webshots pages... a lot of the people who are so proud to be greek are some of the very people giving greeks a bad image. |
