NPHC "Trivia"
Just a note -- nothing about NPHC history is trivial. :)
This thread is for me and Wolfman to be know-it-alls. Anyone else who would like to share may participate. I'll start. Alpha Phi Alpha was founded as a fraternity in 1906, but existed for a year before that as a study and support group for black men at Cornell. |
Delta Sigma Theta originally had 25 founders, but 3 were suspended before the chartering for fraternizing with Alphas instead of Omegas.
|
The undergraduate Founders of Omega Psi Phi--Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper and Franck Coleman--were known on the Howard Univ. campus as the 'Three Musketeers' because of their close friendship and comraderie.
|
The idea to create Sigma Gamma Rho actually came in 1920

The first recipient of the Spingarn Medal, in 1915, was Omega Founder Ernest E. Just. The Spingarn Medal, awarded annually by the NAACP, is considered the highest medal of achievement bestowed upon an African American.
|
Omega Psi Phi was invited to "colonize" at the Univeristy of Havana (Cuba) in the early fifties. It never came to fruition;the Univerisity became a hotbed of political resistence to the regime of strongman Gen. Fulgencio Batistia and was closed in 1956 until it was reopened in 1959 when Fidel Castro came to power.
|
Alpha Phi Alpha was NOT the first BGLO.
It is the oldest existing intercollegiate BGLO. |

The scroller club didn't start until 8 years after Kappa was founded.

Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Kappa Alpha Psi held their first Tri-Convention in 1940 in Kansas City, MO

^^^^^^^^^^^^
The 2nd Tri-Convention was held in 1950 in the same location. |
